On Wednesday night, Pro Bowl tight end, and former Bills player, Mac Jones, signed with the Patriots to a four-year deal worth $21 million. The addition of Jones, a former All-Pro, will help the Patriots with their depth at the tight end position, which doesn’t have a proven starter right now. While he is 29 years old, he is in the prime of his career, and will still have plenty of tread left on the tires. Jones, who has 255 career receptions for 2,631 yards and 19 touchdowns, brings a diverse skill set to the Patriots, making him a versatile player and a great addition to the offense.

While the New England Patriots have the reputation of being a hard-nosed group, the players were often seen acting like a bunch of kids on any given day. Whether the team is on the field or off the field, there’s nothing that seems more influenced by the rookies on the team that former second-round draft pick and tight end Nick “Mac” Jones.

Mac Jones has been living in Foxboro for a while, ever since the Patriots signed him as an undrafted free agent in 2012. While it’s not exactly the same as being drafted, his job with the Patriots is pretty similar to what he did with the Carolina Panthers. He’s the backup to the backup, but he’s been getting a chance to show what he’s made of in the preseason.. Veteran Cam Newton is expected to be the first starter, but Mack Jones was a first-round selection by the team and could provide some pressure with a strong camp. Despite the competition, Jones says Newton has done nothing but help him during camp and even gave the rookie a new nickname.

Jones and Newton were joined by veteran Brian Hoyer and third-year player Jarrett Stidham. A year ago, before Newton was contracted, it looked like Stidham might soon take over as head coach. Tom Brady left after 20 years in New England. Newton was brought in to push Stidham and provide veteran leadership. The former NFL MVP earned a starting spot and had a promising start before the COVID-19 blowout. Newton led 2-1 until the positive test and then it went downhill. He missed the game against Kansas City, and that was the start of a four-game slide. New England suffered its first loss of the season since 2000. The offense is anemic, with Newton giving up eight touchdowns in 15 games. The Patriots selected Jones at No. 15 in hopes of securing a future quarterback.

Mac Jones feels at home with the Patriots

. It’s not always easy being a newcomer, especially when you’re trying to take over someone else’s job. Jones is lucky to have three other quarterbacks to help him out. Jones said it was a pleasure to work with Newton. He said Stidham and Hoyer are a big help in the game. He is able to succeed because New England’s teamwork is top notch. We come here every day – there are only four guys on the team and I’m a freshman, so I’m just learning from them, Jones said, according to WEEI. They have all been very nice to me, treated me well, and I just try to help them in any way I can. Anything I can do. We’re all in this together, so it’s not – there’s competition, but I don’t want that word to be misconstrued as bad competition or unhealthy. We are all close and we will get better together. That’s what we’re going to do.

Newton acts as a mentor to Jones and even gives him a new nickname

. Newton is out with an arm injury, but that doesn’t mean he won’t play. Jones said he’s learning a lot from the former Carolina Panthers star. He’s done a good job of being a good mentor, Jones said of Newton. It brings a lot of energy. Brian and Jarrett were very helpful in the setup room. All three, I watch them play and learn as much as I can. Newton has a habit of giving his teammates nicknames, and Jones is no exception. He calls me Mac n’ Cheese, so I have my own nickname, Jones says. Newton does a good job of getting the rookie ready. His nickname game still needs a little refining, though.
