2022 Players Championship Betting Odds, Outright Picks, and Best Bets

Players Championship week is unlike any other. The Stadium Course at TPC Sawgrass is one of the finest stops on the PGA Tour every year, thanks to the legendary island green on Sunday, danger hiding around every corner on Pete Dye’s classic design, and the atmosphere of a major championship.

We know you’ll be watching the action all weekend, so why not try your luck (responsibly, of course) at golf’s fifth major? Don’t worry, we’ve got you covered with our Players Championship betting preview, which includes odds, winner predictions, and best bets.

Another week on the PGA Tour, another week with Jon Rahm atop the betting board. Every time Rahm, the No. 1 player in the Official World Golf Ranking, has teed it up in 2022, he has been the betting favorite. He does, however, have company this week.

The Players Championship winner, Justin Thomas, is tied for first place on the odds board with Rahm at +1000 to win ($100 bet wins $1,000). Rory McIlroy, the 2019 winner, and Collin Morikawa, at +1600 odds, are just behind the co-favorites. At +2000, Scottie Scheffler, who has won two of his past three PGA Tour events, and World No. 4 Patrick Cantlay are next.

Here is the complete list of the board’s top picks for the 2022 Players.

  • +1000 Jon Rahm
  • +1000 Justin Thomas
  • +1600 Rory McIlroy
  • +1600 Collin Morikawa
  • +2000 Scottie Scheffler
  • +2000 Patrick Cantlay
  • Hovland, Viktor +2200
  • +2500 Xander Schauffele
  • +2500 Hideki Matsuyama
  • +3000 Cameron Smith
  • +3000 Brooks Koepka
  • +3000 Adam Scott
  • +3000 Daniel Berger
  • +3500 Dustin Johnson
  • +4000 Matt Fitzpatrick
  • +4000 Will Zalatoris
  • +4000 Jordan Spieth

Picks for the sixth major in golf.

Although the sample size is still tiny, there is an intriguing list of leaders in total strokes earned so far this season:

Collin Morikawa is the first player on the list. Matt Fitzpatrick (!) is number two. 3. Scottie Scheffler 4. Jon Rahm Cameron Smith is number five. Daniel Berger, No. 6 Justin Thomas (#7) Patrick Cantlay (#8) Sungjae Im (nine) Russell Henley is number ten.

+1600 Collin Morikawa

There’s an argument to be made that Morikawa, along with Rahm and Thomas, could be considered a co-favorite this week. The World No. 2 has had a great start to the 2022 season, finishing in the top seven in each of his five outings. He’s only shot in the 70s four times in 20 rounds on Tour this season.

With my Players Championship wagers this year, I’m putting a premium on excellent ball-striking, and that’s exactly where Morikawa thrives. This season, the American has the best ball striking on Tour, is ninth in strokes gained off the tee, and fourth in strokes gained approaching the green. Oh, and he’s fourth in strokes gained from putting, which is an area of his game where he’s struggled in the past.

Morikawa has shown his ability to win top tournaments on a variety of venues. This week, he’s my favorite top-of-the-board target.

+2500 Hideki Matsuyama

Let’s stick with the ball-strikers and go with Hideki Matsuyama at 25-to-1 odds. With two victories and four top-10s in ten outings this season, the reigning Masters champion comes into The Players in great shape.

Matsuyama missed the cut at TPC Sawgrass in 2021, but don’t forget that before COVID-19 shut down the whole sports world after Round 1, he shot a course-record 63 in 2020. I’m willing to bet he can repeat his great performance this season.

+3000 Daniel Berger

In 2022, Daniel Berger should have already won, but a final-round collapse at the Honda Classic denied him his fifth career triumph. Berger, on the other hand, has been hitting the ball well all season. This season, he is ranked fourth on the Tour in driving accuracy and sixth in strokes gained from tee to green.

TPC Sawgrass is also a golf course featuring bunkers on every hole, and Berger has the best sand-save % on the Tour. He should be in contention come Sunday afternoon if his putter doesn’t go ice cold as it did two weeks ago.

Best Bets for the Players in 2022

A ridiculous quantity of golf.

Collin Morikawa finished in the top 20 with a score of -115.

I’ve previously explained why I like Morikawa so highly in this tournament, but if you don’t think he’ll win, a top-20 bet would be a lot safer bet. He hasn’t finished below the top seven in any race this season, and I don’t expect that to change in the biggest event of 2022 thus far.

Matt Fitzpatrick finished in the top 20 with a score of +175.

Matt Fitzpatrick may not be a household name among casual golf fans, but he’s been very steady throughout the season. In total strokes gained, the Englishman is second on the PGA Tour, and he’s placed T12 or better in each of his past four outings.

I’m not betting on Fitzpatrick to win in this field (he has yet to win on the Tour), therefore I’m avoiding an outright stake. But I’ll take a chance at +175 to finish in the top 20.

Chris Kirk finished in the top 40 with a score of +110.

T14, T7, and T5 Chris Kirk’s previous three Tour starts have yielded these results.

Kirk is having a great start to the Florida swing, and I believe he’ll be able to keep it up into The Players. TPC Sawgrass has always been favorable to shorter hitters, since accuracy off the tee and approaching the green is more important than distance.

Good luck with all you’re doing this week!
