Russell Westbrook has had a Hall of Fame career, but he’s not in the Hall. Should he be? What does his legacy look like without the hardware?

The russell westbrook championship rings is a 4-time NBA Champion who gave an assessment of Russell Westbrook’s Hall of Fame case.

Russell Westbrook has the most triple-doubles of any player in NBA history, yet averaging a triple-double for a whole season is about as uncommon as going to the mailbox. He’s a two-time NBA MVP, a nine-time All-Star, and the first player to win two scoring championships while also leading the league in assists three times. Westbrook’s Hall of Fame résumé, though, is incomplete, according to a former four-time NBA champion.

John Salley earned two rings as a backup player with the Bad Boys Detroit Pistons, a third in 1996 while playing five minutes per game for Michael Jordan and the 72-win Chicago Bulls, and a fourth in 1999–00 with the Los Angeles Lakers. Salley claims to know what a Hall of Fame player looks like after playing with so many. However, he isn’t completely convinced on Westbrook, who is currently with the Lakers.

John Salley aspired to be inducted into the Hall of Fame.

In 12 NBA seasons, John Salley averaged 7.0 points and 4.5 rebounds in 22.1 minutes per game. With an average of 1.3 blocked shots per game, he ranks 96th in NBA history. With 5,228 points and 3,356 rebounds over the course of 12 years, it seems that his counting numbers fall short of the Hall of Fame threshold. To put it another way, Russell Westbrook has an edge in these areas.

Salley has a 0.2 percent probability of being inducted into the Basketball Hall of Fame, according to Basketball-Hall Reference’s of Fame Probability index. If you’re doing the arithmetic at home, that’s a 1-in-500 chance. That is the same likelihood of being born a polydactyl, according to Health Research Funding (born with 11 or more fingers or toes). So you’re saying Spider may have a chance? Just not much of one, you know.

Salley, however, recently decided that he is Hall-worthy during an interview on the VladTV show.

“I’m observing how they choose individuals for the Hall of Fame, and I have a lot of numbers that are better than a lot of them,” Salley said.

Only one Hall of Famer was inducted as a player who played fewer minutes per game than Salley. And Louie Dampier is accompanied by a large red, white, and blue asterisk. In three NBA seasons, Dampier averaged 19.1 minutes per game. He was elected into the Hall of Fame for his ABA career, during which he averaged 38.1 minutes per night and was the ABA’s all-time leader in 3-pointers, games and minutes played, assists, and points.

Let’s go into Salley’s criticism of Westbrook now that we’ve established that he’s not a Hall of Famer in any way, shape, or form.

Russell Westbrook is a “maybe” for the Hall of Fame, according to John Salley.

John Salley won four NBA championships, but he's wrong if he thinks Russell Westbrook has more to do to ensure a Hall of Fame spot

In a broad sense, John Salley is right. Russell Westbrook’s achievements throughout his career are divisive. He averaged double figures in points, rebounds, and assists five times, making the triple-double a frequent occurrence. This brings the overall number of triple-double seasons in the NBA to six (Oscar Robertson in 1961–62 and Westbrook’s slew).

However, Westbrook’s judgment may be questioned. He’s a poor 3-point shooter at the point guard position in the pace-and-space era (not Ben Simmons-dismal, but not good).

Still, Westbrook has work to do to persuade Salley:

“Perhaps” (Westbrook is a Hall of Famer). I believe he is at ease – and that is the key. There’s no bullshit here, so I don’t expect any nonsense because he needs to win a championship. You inquired as to whether he would be inducted into the Hall of Fame. For starters, I’m not sure how it works since I know Ben Wallace made it in… Defensive Player of the Year on a defensive squad. And he only scored 5.7 points per game on average.

“And (Westbrook) is incredible to be in this position. So, it seems that you must win a championship. With the exception of Charles Barkley.”

Westbrook, according to Salley, is a definite maybe. So, there you have it.

Russell Westbrook is untouchable in terms of statistics.

Russell Westbrook has 21,857 points, 8,061 assists, and 6,961 rebounds in 13 NBA seasons. As a 6-foot-3 point guard, he averages 7.4 rebounds per game. It’s the greatest all-time among players of that height or lower who have played at least 400 games. Lafayette Lever is in second place with a score of 6.0. So it’s a knockout in the first round.

A title is not required for NBA Hall of Fame entry, contrary to John Salley’s belief. Coaches Rick Adelman and Cotton Fitzsimmons, as well as player Chris Webber, were also inducted without a ring this year. Salley’s hypothesis is refuted by dozens of others.

Westbrook may or may not get a ring before the end of his career. He might, however, resign immediately and book a ticket to Springfield, Massachusetts, for September 2025. Russell Westbrook is on his way to becoming a Hall of Famer, and a championship is just the frosting on the cake. But what about the cake itself? It has already been baked.

Basketball Reference and Stathead provided the statistics.
