However, no amount of money could ever alter Larry Bird’s mind. The Boston Celtics great understood exactly what he loved, and he stuck to it.
Consider the sharpshooter’s restaurant preferences. While Larry Legend’s celebrity and wealth would have allowed him to eat almost anyplace, he would not be found in Boston’s better restaurants.

Larry Bird is rightly regarded as an NBA great these days. His illustrious career, though, earned him more than just a spot in basketball history. The forward also walked away from the hardwood with a big amount of cash in his pocket.
The Hick from French Lick, on the other hand, appeared headed for a more ordinary life until he gained fame and riches. Bird was from an impoverished family, but his basketball skills earned him a scholarship to Indiana University. The big guy, however, didn’t fit in on the Bloomington campus and never played for Bob Knight’s Hoosiers team. Bird returned home and got employment as a trash collector. By all accounts, he seemed to love his job.
That job, no matter how pleasant it was, was certain to fail. Bird returned to college thanks to a guy called Bill Hodges. The forward transferred to Indiana State and rapidly rose through the ranks of the Sycamores’ basketball squad.
Larry Legend, of course, shown enough ability to attract the attention of the Boston Celtics’ management. He signed a five-year, $3.25 million contract with the historic club only a few years after cleaning up garbage. While that may seem little to today’s players, when Bird signed the dotted line, it became the biggest rookie deal in sports history.
Before his original contract ended, the Indiana State product went on to earn Rookie of the Year accolades and an NBA championship, paving the way for a raise. His second deal earned him $1.8 million each season, and things only got better from there. The Celtics kept rolling, and the perennial All-bank Star’s account grew.
By the end of his career, the Celtics great had racked up 13 professional seasons, three NBA titles, and three MVP awards. He’d also made a salary of little over $24 million, which was a substantial amount in the days before mega-TV agreements.
Larry Legend, on the other hand, wasn’t likely to spend that much money on fine dining.

Bird might have controlled the social scene, hopping between black-tie galas and the best restaurants, thanks to his financial clout and general celebrity. In fact, he wanted things to be a little simpler.
Larry Legend was voted the league’s MVP at the end of the 1983-84 season. That would be a huge accolade for most guys. Bird, on the other hand, was not like the majority of the players.
While some questioned if the Boston Celtics’ big man would even show up for the awards show, he finally arrived in Salt Lake City. That may have avoided one crisis, but it has resulted in the emergence of a new one. Bird wore a short-sleeved shirt and pants when it was time to take the stage and collect his award. More than a few individuals were reportedly disgusted by this action.
Larry Legend, on the other hand, was unconcerned. According to Mike Cotton of the Washington Post (H/T Los Angeles Times), he said, “All I know is that it was summer, which is vacation time for me, and I wear anything I want while I’m on vacation.” “It would have been much simpler for them to just put the award in a box and ship it to Boston, where we could have had a lovely party….” I was aware that it was a dinner, but it didn’t bother me.”
Bird also said that he disliked the fancy dining scene when it came to awkward social gatherings.
He said, “I despise going to places where you have to wear jackets and ties.” “What is it for?” They just want your money, food, and to get you out.”

When taken out of context, Bird’s remarks regarding banquets and restaurants may seem implausible. How could someone so wealthy and well-known turn off the benefits of celebrity? While we can only learn so much about a celebrity from afar, it seems that Larry Legend understood who he was and refused to allow anything, even money, alter him.
“What most impresses the people who know Bird — from his few new friends in Boston to those in Terre Haute, Indiana State’s home town, to the French Lickers who have known him since he was an itty-bitty thing with a basketball under his arm — is that nothing has changed him,” John Papanek explained in a 1981 Sports Illustrated feature. “Not the celebrity,” says the speaker. Not because of the money, which is $650,000 per year. Nothing.”
Larry Legend kept things simple even after becoming pro. He was not interested in attending banquets or eating at the best restaurants. Shooting hoops and drinking a cool beer were on the menu instead.
“The ideal team player in the definitive team game still wears blue jeans and baseball hats, and being alone with a basketball and a goal to shoot at still gives him a third of his joy. “Being a member of a team contributes another third,” Papanek added. “Winning, mowing his yard, drinking beer, shooting squirrels, fishing, playing golf, and being with friends and family provide the remainder of his pleasure.”
Money, as the cliché goes, cannot buy happiness. Larry Bird, based on his own practices, seems to be in agreement.
