Jordan Michael was never one to back down against the NBA’s larger and stronger players. Even when his opponent had a significant physical edge over him, he was always the one who did the frightening.

When Jordan faced 7-foot-1, 300-pound Shaquille O’Neal in 1995, he acknowledged felt scared by his massive stature and physically powerful style of play. Shaq had an opportunity to become the only player Jordan feared on the court, but he squandered it by doing a compassionate deed that taught MJ not to be frightened of the gentle giant.

Jordan returned to the Chicago Bulls after giving up his baseball vacation in 1995 to discover an even larger and stronger Shaq than he recalled. O’Neal was in his third season in the NBA at the time, and he weighed more than 300 pounds.

Jordan admits to being nervous about facing such a large and unstoppable force in a recent interview with The Ringer’s Jackie MacMullan on her Icons Club podcast.

“I’m playing against Shaq,” Jordan stated after returning from baseball. “I don’t know whether I’ve ever told anybody this.” “In terms of physicality, Shaq is the largest player I’ve ever seen play.” When I returned from baseball, he was this gigantic, massive person, and I was a little terrified.”

When Shaq knocked him to the ground with all his might, the fear rose, but he then committed the cardinal offense when playing against Jordan Michael.

He assisted him in getting up.

“I had no idea how to play against him.” Do I attack him head-on? Do I come to a halt and pull up? blah blah blah blah blah blah blah bla So I charged at him, and he just knocked me to the ground before reaching down to pick me up.

‘Naw, he didn’t mean it, he’s a great man,’ I replied. I would have been frightened if he had departed and walked over me as in the old school. His heart, however, is much too wonderful. That’s not his personality.

It helped to reduce the fear element.”

Jordan recognized there was nothing to be frightened of when it came to Shaq at that time.

“Did you realize you had him?” MacMullan inquired.

Jordan said, “I did, I did.”

Jordan’s Bulls met O’Neal’s Orlando Magic in the Eastern Conference Semifinals in the 1995 playoffs. Jordan outscored Shaq in four of the six games in the series, but Orlando triumphed in six.

The Bulls and Magic met again in the playoffs the following year, this time in the Eastern Conference Finals. Jordan utilized his newfound expertise to demolish O’Neal and avenge himself with a four-game sweep. In the deciding Game 4, MJ scored 45 points to put the Magic away.

Jordan won 12 of the 21 games they played against each other, while Shaq won nine. Jordan also defeated O’Neal in six of their ten postseason encounters.

Shaq would have had more success versus MJ if he had never shown weakness by assisting the greatest basketball player of all time.
