The New England Patriots were the worst affected by COVID-19 opt-outs. Bill Belichick began the first year of the post-Tom Brady era with a squad that lacked competent starters at crucial spots, with battle-tested veterans like Dont’a Hightower and Patrick Chung opting out of the 2020 season. Furthermore, COVID-19 created issues for a few Patriots players during the team’s dismal 7-9 season.
While Belichick certainly improved the roster over the past four months, the NFL’s contentious COVID-19 vaccination policy dealt a serious blow to his coaching staff this week. The burden is on Carmen Bricillo to make sure the Patriots’ most talented position group plays up to its promise in a club that preaches “next man up.”

The Patriots took a significant step back on defense after allowing the fewest points in the NFL last season. It didn’t help that the team was without two three-time Super Bowl champions (Hightower and Chung). The Patriots lost not just their performance, but also the leadership and expertise that the two native defenders offered for years.
New England had to replace starting right tackle Marcus Cannon on the opposite side of the ball. Fortunately for Belichick, 2020 sixth-round pick Michael Onwenu established himself as a real force in his first season. Regardless, Cannon’s absence harmed the team’s tackle depth.
COVID-19 made a few unexpected appearances throughout the regular season, of course. Cam Newton was unable to play for the Kansas City Chiefs after testing positive for the coronavirus. Meanwhile, backup quarterbacks Brian Hoyer and Jarrett Stidham were hammered by Andy Reid’s squad. In addition, many other Patriots players, including top cornerback Stephon Gilmore, spent the 2020 season on the reserve/COVID-19 list.

Whatever his feelings on the NFL’s COVID-19 vaccine policy, Belichick can’t be happy about losing a member of his coaching staff so close to training camp.
Cole Popovich will not coach the Patriots this season, according to Jim McBride of the Boston Globe. Following the retirement of renowned offensive line coach Dante Scarnecchia in 2020, he and Carmen Bricillo took over as offensive line coaches. Popovich, who joined the club in 2015, will not be a member of Belichick’s coaching staff this season.
On Twitter, NFL Network reporter Michael Giardi offered more insight regarding the incident.
Giardi stated, “Sources tell me it’s linked to COVID-19 criteria.” “During the spring practices, Popovich was covered up (at times).”
All Tier 1 employees, including coaches, front-office executives, equipment managers, and scouts, must be vaccinated unless they have a legitimate religious or medical exemption, according to McBride. With the Patriots’ training camp starting next week, the timing of Popovich’s announcement indicates he didn’t agree with a policy that has sparked debate.
Rick Dennison “is gone as a Minnesota Vikings assistant coach,” according to ESPN’s Courtney Cronin, after he declined to get a COVID-19 vaccination. The fact that a coach was fired due to a personal medical choice demonstrates the life-altering implications of not adhering to the league’s rules.

With Popovich out of the Patriots’ plans for 2021, Bricillo will be in charge of ensuring sure the offensive line lives up to expectations. Fortunately for the 45-year-old assistant coach, he has enough of talent to work with.
Given the uncertainty surrounding the quarterback and wide receiver positions, the fact that New England has good offensive line depth should give them hope for a comeback in 2021. Isaiah Wynn, the team’s first-round selection in 2018, has the athleticism and pass-protection abilities required to excel at left tackle. Trent Brown, a prospective free agent on the right side, has plenty of incentive now that he’s back in New England to reclaim his Pro Bowl form.
Meanwhile, Bricillo has the opportunity to coach a strong starting trio of interior lineman. Onwenu, who stands 6-foot-3 and weighs 350 pounds, could be a smooth replacement for Joe Thuney at left guard. From his center position, veteran David Andrews should continue to be the offensive line’s leader. When healthy, right guard Shaq Mason is a powerful blocker who burys opponents with a mix of strength and movement.
Overall, the Patriots’ projected starting offensive line is one of the finest in the NFL.
Only time will tell whether Bill Belichick’s loss of Cole Popovich will come back to harm him.
