The Boston Celtics are taking a lot of knocks right now. When Al Horford was ruled out of Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals against the Miami Heat, the squad was caught off guard. Horford was put on medical hold only hours before the game.
Horford’s absence, along with Marcus Smart’s absence from the series opener due to a foot ailment, left the Celtics without two vital starters. Boston now confronts a new obstacle in Game 2 on Thursday, with yet another player sidelined.
Derrick White will miss Game 2 for the Boston Celtics.
Derrick White, a trade deadline acquisition, will miss Game 2 due to “personal circumstances.” Ime Udoka, the team’s first-year coach, clarified matters when he stated that White is returning to Boston to give birth to his kid.

Smart is expected to return to the floor for the Celtics on Thursday. Udoka says he’s on the mend but will put his foot to the test before the game. The Celtics coach was pessimistic about Horford’s return, describing him as “doubtful.”
“Al remains skeptical,” Udoka added. “He’ll follow the procedures, and we won’t know his state until the results of various tests come back.” It’s a possibility, but he’s skeptical right now.

Without Horford, Robert Williams was given more playing time. Due to a damaged knee, the athletic center didn’t play much in the Eastern Conference Semifinals against the Milwaukee Bucks. He had an immediate impact in the opening against the Heat. In 28 minutes, Williams had 18 points and nine rebounds. With two blocks, he also offered a defensive presence in the paint.
Payton Pritchard will most likely get more playing time as a result of White’s absence. Pritchard came off the bench in the opener and scored 18 points on four three-pointers in 30 minutes.
The Celtics surged out to an early lead without Smart and Horford, and led 62-54 at halftime. The Heat rallied and blew the game open in the third quarter, outscoring the Celtics 39-14.
