NFL players have always been outspoken in their anti-antivaccine beliefs. Recently, however, they have begun to make a statement that the anti-vaccine movement doesn’t shy away from anything. Vaccine-rejecting athletes like New England Patriots wide receiver Cole Beasley have taken it further by attacking the NFL itself.
Many NFL players are cautious, hesitant or downright reluctant to get one of the approved COVID-19 vaccines. One of the most open players about not being vaccinated is Buffalo Bills receiver Cole Beasley. Even as such, the league is a mix of people from all over the country, making it a microcosm of America. Some players, such as C.J. Mosley of the New York Jets, proudly declared that they had been vaccinated, sharing photos on social media and encouraging others to get vaccinated as well. Others, like Mosley’s new teammate Zach Wilson, refused to answer personal questions about the vaccines. Bills quarterback Josh Allen and Carolina Panthers rookie Sam Darnold have expressed doubts about getting the shot until they have more information about the long-term effects. Montez Sweet of the Washington football team was one of the most outspoken players against vaccines and told reporters: I don’t have COVID yet, so I don’t see myself getting COVID treatment until I actually get it. Beasley also participated in a discussion about vaccines on social media. In response to Dr. Anthony Fauci’s statement that vaccinated people can stop wearing masks outside, Beasley tweeted: I’m doing this without being vaccinated. Is that illegal now? After being confronted with the reaction of his followers, Beasley tweeted: If you’ve been vaccinated, are you okay? So if I don’t do it, I don’t have to pass it on to you, right? … This is a serious matter. I don’t know how it works, I’m not a doctor.

In June, the NFL and NFLPA announced new COVID-19 restrictions for the upcoming season. Beasley is not at all happy with the new rules or the organization that negotiated them, and he made his displeasure known onTwitter. Referring to a list of the new rules on Twitter, Beasley wrote: It’s crazy. Did we vote on this? I’m at the hotel. We still have meetings. We’ll all be together. Vaccinated players can leave the hotel and take the Covid to where I am. So what does it matter if I stay in a hotel? One hundred percent immunity through vaccination? No. In a series of three more tweets, Beasley called the NFLPA a crank and accused the NFL of promoting vaccinating players to again make as much money as possible. He concluded by saying that the new restrictions need to be changed and that is why he is against the rules, hoping that the right people will see this and at least think about how this whole NFLPA thing works.
