As the legend goes, during the 1988-89 basketball season, the Los Angeles Lakers were playing a game against the New York Knicks when Charles Barkley, at the time a rookie, went up for a layup. As Barkley put his hands up for the shot, he was attacked by Knicks power forward Darryl Dawkins, who was sent to the locker room shortly thereafter.

On June 29, 1995, the NBA’s Charles Barkley was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. On one hand, it was a dream come true for the 6’6” power forward and three-time NBA All-Star. On the other hand, the move to the 76ers meant that Barkley would have to temporarily live in New Jersey while he waited for a new home in Philadelphia. That meant that he would have to avoid the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area along with bruising NBA greats Michael Jordan and Larry Bird.

Charles Barkley is one of the most recognizable faces in sports, and he’s got the build to match. But when he was a rookie with the Philadelphia 76ers in 1984, he was cut after just two games, in part because he weighed more than 240 pounds and was “too fat to play basketball.”. If you’ve been a long-time sports fan, you’re undoubtedly aware of professional players spending their vast wealth on a variety of luxury items. Charles Barkley, on the other hand, had to dig into his pocketbook in the 1990s for an odd reason: the NBA practically required it.

Sir Charles, of course, had a habit of getting himself into trouble, and the NBA decided to put a stop to it following a “barroom brawl.” Barkley had to hire a bodyguard or resign from professional basketball if he wanted to go out in public.

Charles Barkley was a gifted player who had a habit of getting himself into trouble.

Sir Charles’ confidence helped him win many NBA games and achieve on-air success with TNT, but his belief may create some problems. Barkley wasn’t one to back down when it came to a fight.

Although some on-court brawls were unavoidable — Chuck did play in the 1980s and 1990s, after all — Barkley’s brawls were not limited to the floor. The forward had at least a handful of run-ins with the public, which resulted in him making headlines. A group of guys challenged the forward to show his toughness on an evening out in Milwaukee, for example. Sir Charles retaliated by breaking one of his opponents’ noses in his best Karate Kid impersonation.

Another time, in 1997, Barkley was at a Florida pub when a guy hurled two glasses of ice in his way. Despite the intervention of an off-duty police officer, Sir Charles managed to grab the stranger and hurl him through a plate-glass window.

The NBA stepped in after the latter occurrence.

Barkley did not back down after that event. ” I’m going to stand up for myself. There should be no dispute. According to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel, he added, “If you disturb me, I’m going to beat your ass.” “I smashed his ass against the glass after he threw ice in my face. That is something I do not refute. I stood up for myself. He got what was coming to him.” The NBA, on the other hand, had different plans.

The forward spoke with NBA deputy commissioner Russ Granik and vice president of security Horace Balmer, according to an AP story (H/T Los Angeles Times). Barkley was given an ultimatum by those men: “Retire or employ security guards.”

Chuck insisted that he acted properly during the incident in Florida, although he did consent to the second choice.

“The league informed me that I have to take security guards with me every time I went out,” Barkley said. “I will not be baited, no matter what anybody says or does to me. I’ll let my security guys handle it if someone throws a drink at me.”

Charles Barkley’s net worth was sufficient to cover the additional expense.

It doesn’t matter how much money you have, confronting an unexpected expense is never pleasant. Barkley, on the other hand, is unlikely to have flinched.

Barkley received $2.25 million in raw pay for the 1997-98 NBA season, which would have been his first with bodyguards. The next season, he earned $1 million and then added another $9 million before calling it a career. Sir Charles earned approximately $40 million from the 76ers, Suns, and Rockets when he departed from professional basketball.

Chuck’s net worth of $50 million shows that employing a security crew didn’t break the bank, despite his post-retirement media job boosting his bottom line. If anything, it may have saved Barkley from more penalties and legal problems.

Spotrac provided the financial data.
