So as we know, the Chiefs had traded for Andy Dalton in 2018, and now the Bears have traded for Andy Dalton in 2019. And if you’re like me, you’re wondering why the Chiefs traded for an injury-prone quarterback who’s almost 30, and the Bears traded for a quarterback who’s still relatively young at 26, and why the Chiefs immediately brought back Alex Smith, and the Bears didn’t bring back a quarterback.

In a recent interview with ESPN’s Josina Anderson, Bears coach Matt Nagy said that signal caller Andy Dalton is the starter for now, over rookie second round pick of the draft Justin Fields. Nagy said this after the first preseason game, when the Bears lost to the Bengals 33-21. In the game, Dalton was 7-for-15 with 71 yards and 1 touchdown. Field was only able to complete 3-of-5 passes for 22 yards.

New Bears coach Matt Nagy has flexed his power over the football team by naming a starting quarterback for the 2018 season. And, he’s done it before he even takes the field in a preseason game. Nagy named Andy Dalton the starter ahead of fourth-round pick, Justin Fields, during the team’s first open OTA practice. The move surprised many NFL fans, as Dalton’s performance last season was lackluster at best.. Read more about who will be bears starting qb 2021 and let us know what you think.

If Chicago Bears fans were hoping for rookie quarterback Justin Fields to start this season, head coach Matt Nagy shattered their hopes by naming Andy Dalton as the starter.

Many people expected Fields to start the first game for the Bears, so this may come as a surprise. Is this simply a part-time job for Dalton? When will Nagy hand over the reins to Fields?

Andy Dalton’s announcement by Matt Nagy

Thursday’s quarterback update:

*Andy Dalton had a serious expression on his face. The offensive is clearly in your control. How you’d expect a Year 11 quarterback to practice.

*Justin Fields isn’t quite as sharp. There are several inaccuracies. On Day 2, a rookie quarterback should look like this.

*Nick Foles shredded the #3 defense for the most part.

According to ESPN, Bears head coach Matt Nagy stated approximately a month ago that Andy Dalton will replace Justin Fields as the team’s starting quarterback. On July 29, however, he felt compelled to restate his position:

“Andy has a lot of experience in this league and a lot of success. He knows where this city, this company, and all of us as coaches stand on Justin, but for the time being, Andy is the starter and Justin is the backup, and they embrace and respect that.”

Nagy may have made this statement to relieve Fields of some of the burden that has been placed on him heading into this season. The coach is aware of the supporters’ expectations and is aware of their delight. However, for the time being, the experienced quarterback is the starter.

Justin Fields is having a difficult time at training camp.

Fields is struggling, according to sources from Bears training camp, which may explain why Nagy is starting Dalton.

The Athletic’s Adam Jahns tweeted on the quarterback battle between Fields and Dalton: “Andy Dalton was the best of the QBs.” Overall, a good day, but the defense definitely won several exercises. Justin Fields was dealing with some growing pains on another day. But that’s OK. He’s a newbie.”

Brad Biggs with The Chicago Tribune also seems to agree with Jahns. He tweeted: “Experience difference between Andy Dalton & Justin Fields was clear. The rookie was slower making reads and struggled some with ball placement.”

In a quarterback battle, what’s going on in the Bears’ training camp isn’t uncommon. In New England, for example, the Patriots Talk podcast recently claimed that veteran quarterback Cam Newton is behind youngster Mac Jones in the quarterback battle. Bill Belichick, like Nagy, selected his experienced quarterback as the starter before camp had started.

Dalton has been dubbed one of the NFL’s worst quarterbacks.

“There are big expectations here,” says new Bears quarterback Andy Dalton. This group has been close for many years…. I’m thrilled about this group and what we’ll be able to accomplish.”

Despite his head coach’s support, The Athletic ranked Dalton as one of the worst quarterbacks in the league. Furthermore, NFL professionals that were anonymously polled by The Athletic had the following negative things to say about the quarterback:

One NFL evaluator said, “I wouldn’t even say genuine starter at this time.” “I believe he has completely lost his grip. You’d say he was a 3 throughout his career, but his accuracy was terrible last year, his arm was weak, and he wasn’t very mobile.”

Not the greatest recommendation for a quarterback who might start for a club that made the playoffs last season. Despite the critics, Dalton does not need to be spectacular for the Bears to win. The Bears aren’t asking Dalton to replace Fields, but he may be used as a fill-in until Fields is ready to make his Bears debut.

It is pretty well-known that Chicago Bears head coach Matt Nagy wanted to add quarterback Justin Fields to the roster this year, but the NFL Draft came and went without an offer. Then, when the Bears signed veteran QB Mike Glennon, the Bears decided to stick with their incumbent starter Andy Dalton. And now, after their preseason win over the Kansas City Chiefs, the Bears have decided to stick with Dalton for the foreseeable future … for now..
