The Indianapolis Colts seemingly have a quarterback controversy on their hands. But who has that role? It’s not Andrew Luck, who has been out the last three weeks with a shoulder injury. Nope. It’s not Jacoby Brissett, who is barely a backup. And it’s definitely not him — the third-string guy.
Since the best team to ever play the game has been fielded, the question has been asked: Who is the best quarterback the NFL has seen since John Elway? The answer may surprise you: not Tom Brady, not Peyton Manning, not even Joe Montana. It’s actually Brian Hoyer.

The Indianapolis Colts’ regular-season opener is less than a month away, and they have no clue if quarterback Carson Wentz will start. The Colts acquired Wentz in the summer with the hopes of his replacing Peyton Manning or Andrew Luck as their franchise quarterback. However, he is now out for five to twelve weeks due to a foot injury, and the club has no idea when he will be able to return this season.
One of Wentz’s backups, on the other hand, has lately been described in the same sentence as Joe Montana and Tom Brady.
Yes, it’s true.
Although no one remarked, “This guy looks like Tom Brady out here,” Colts owner Jim Irsay said that he hopes rookie quarterback Sam Ehlinger becomes the next Joe Cool or TB12. And maybe, just maybe, Ehlinger is headed in that direction.

During his four years as the starter for the Texas Longhorns, Ehlinger established himself as one of the best quarterbacks in the nation at one of college football’s most illustrious schools.
Ehlinger had a tremendous 2018 season after passing for 1,915 yards, 11 touchdowns, and seven interceptions in 2017. He passed for 3,292 yards, 25 touchdowns, and five interceptions in addition to rushing for 482 yards and 16 touchdowns. That year, the former four-star quarterback from Austin, Texas, guided the Longhorns to a 10-4 record and a Sugar Bowl victory.
In 2019 and 2020, Ehlinger continued to enjoy success, passing for 3,663 yards, 32 touchdowns, and 10 interceptions while also rushing for 663 yards and seven touchdowns. In the COVID-19-shortened 2020 season, he passed for 2,556 yards, 26 touchdowns, and five interceptions.
Despite his performance at Texas, Ehlinger’s draft status was never high since he lacks the height and arm power of a conventional NFL quarterback. The Colts took him in the sixth round of the NFL draft in 2021.

With Wentz out for the season due to injury, the Colts must figure out who will start in his place if he isn’t ready for Week 1.
Former five-star quarterback Jacob Eason seems to have the upper hand after gaining experience as a rookie in Indianapolis last year. Ehlinger, on the other hand, has made a name for himself and is now sharing first-team reps with him.
According to Stephen Holder of The Athletic, Colts head coach Frank Reich stated on Aug. 10 that Jacob did nothing wrong. “We decided to divide it up because this is a meritocracy and Sam has looked well. The good news is that they both seemed to be in excellent shape today. We’ll keep dividing those reps.”
When a club selects a quarterback in the sixth round, they hope to find the next Tom Brady. And it seems that Jim Irsay, the owner of the Indianapolis Colts, is crossing his fingers that this is the case with Ehlinger.
“Sam, we’re constantly looking for the next Montana or Brady, and you wonder, ‘Where’s the next Montana or Brady?’ ‘Could it possibly be him?’ According to The Athletic, Irsay remarked, “You simply don’t know.”
Of course, Irsay wishes for this. But what if Ehlinger turns out to be the next draft steal? What would the Colts do if Wentz signed with them? Drew Bledsoe was a capable quarterback, but the Patriots passed on him in favor of Brady.
Those are issues that are unlikely to be answered because Ehlinger is unlikely to be the next great quarterback. But it’s fascinating to hear Irsay say that after acquiring his new franchise quarterback this summer.
The Indianapolis Colts may face a difficult choice at quarterback.
If Wentz isn’t ready to play in Week 1, the Colts may have a difficult choice.
They’ll have the preseason to see how Eason and Ehlinger perform, but if practice is any indication, Ehlinger might be a game changer.
Both quarterbacks performed well in a combined session with the Carolina Panthers, according to The Athletic, although Ehlinger has allegedly absorbed the system fast and controls it effectively. He also gets rid of the ball quicker and with greater decisiveness than Eason. However, Ehlinger’s opponent, Eason, is 6 feet 6 inches tall and has a huge arm, thus he has more offensive experience and all the skills.
It seems that the competition is wide open.
It’s uncertain who will start for the Colts in Week 1, but considering how he’s turned heads in practice and seized charge of the offense as a rookie, Ehlinger, dubbed “the next Tom Brady,” may well be the starter.
