The Boston Celtics have a lot of work to do if they want to become the contenders everyone expects them to be, but their performance so far this season has been much better than expected.

The “Boston Celtics improve at the NBA trade deadline?” is a question that has been asked for quite some time. The answer is no, not just yet. They are still not where they need to be. Read more in detail here: nba rumors, trade.

Did the Boston Celtics Improve at the NBA Trade Deadline? Not Just Yet

The Boston Celtics concentrated on economics and the future during the NBA trade deadline, while other teams ahead of them in the Eastern Conference improved. Brad Stevens, the team’s first-year president of basketball operations, sent seven players go and welcomed back two.

The trade deadline has come and gone, and the Celtics have yet to make an impact. This season, they performed some housekeeping and left some opportunity for development.

The Boston Celtics were busy, but they couldn’t improve their performance on the court.

By 3 p.m. Thursday, the Milwaukee Bucks, Philadelphia 76ers, and Brooklyn Nets had all improved. The Celtics did some tinkering with their roster, but there was no apparent improvement. Two key contributors, Josh Richardson and Dennis Schroder, as well as previous first-round selection Romeo Langford, left Boston.

The biggest story of the day was the 76ers’ dissatisfied Ben Simmons being traded to the Brooklyn Nets as part of a package deal featuring James Harden. Simmons, Seth Curry, Andre Drummond, and two first-round draft selections were sent to the Nets in exchange for the oft-injured 32-year-old guard.

Both clubs benefit immediately from the arrangement. Simmons is a top player, Curry is an amazing shooter, and Drummond is a powerful interior presence for the Nets.

Harden’s acquisition instantly elevates the Sixers to a championship contender. Simmons had not played a minute in Philadelphia, so bringing him in can only help a club that is currently 32-22 and three games off of first place.

Serge Ibaka has joined the Bucks, giving Milwaukee much-needed frontcourt relief. This season, the Bucks have been without center Brook Lopez. Lopez is on the mend after undergoing back surgery. Last season, Ibaka was restricted to 41 games due to a back issue. He was acquired in a four-team trade by the Bucks. Donte DiVincenzo, Semi Ojeleye, and Rodney Hood were all lost in the trade.

The Boston Celtics haven’t improved – at least not yet.

In exchange for Richardson, Langford, their 2022 first-round selection, and the opportunity to trade first-round picks in 2028, the Celtics received guard Derrick White from the San Antonio Spurs.

White is a capable two-way guard who has averaged 14.4 points and 5.6 assists in 49 appearances. He’s a fantastic perimeter defender who has been likened to Marcus Smart of the Boston Celtics. Smart, with his grit and energy, is Boston’s heart and soul, despite being chastised for his awful long-range shooting. Smart is a stronger 3-point shooter than White (31.6 percent) (31.4 percent ).

Daniel Theis, a former Celtics center, was also re-signed by the team. Schroder, Enes Freedom, and Bruno Fernando were sent from Boston.

In his four seasons with the Celtics, Theis averaged 7.2 points and 4.9 rebounds, making him a fan favorite.

In return for a future second-round selection, Boston also sent two injured players, Bol Bol and P.J. Dozier, as well as monetary considerations.

The Celtics now have five available roster spaces as a result of the transactions. This might make them a buyer in the buyout market, allowing them to shift the needle back to where they were before.

The Celtics allowed themselves considerable leeway.

While the three distinct moves did not elevate the Celtics to the ranks of title contenders, they do provide Stevens with some alternatives. Many of the Celtics’ departing players were not part of the team’s long-term plans. It allows Stevens to be more flexible with his roster.

According to MassLive’s Brian Robb, the Celtics are now around $3.5 million under the luxury tax threshold. This will enable them to make moves for players whose contracts have been bought out by their current club. The Celtics have two weeks to return to the league’s 14-player minimum.

The Celtics’ decision to go with white is a long-term one. Along with Theis, he’s committed through the 2024-25 season and is anticipated to be a big contributor.

To round out that roster, the Celtics might go to the G-League or some NBA veterans.

Stevens was very busy at the time of the deadline, but he will continue to make moves in the coming weeks.
