Dustin Johnson and Bryson DeChambeau, two of the best golfers in the world, have had a relationship rife with drama. The American pros are both vying for this week’s FedEx Cup title despite trading barbs on Twitter just days ago about who was more deserving after each made moves that would make them contenders.

The golf event was won by Joaquin Niemann, but the weekend was won by the PGA Tour. Johnson, Dustin missed the cut by two strokes at the Genesis Invitational in Pacific Palisades, California, but he dealt a major blow to Greg Norman’s renegade tour. Bryson Dechambeau was not far behind.
The Super Golf League will have to reinvent itself as the Pretty Good Golf League if more of the world’s finest golfers follow suit. Alternatively, it may have to quit up completely.

Johnson, Dustin announced his allegiance to the PGA Tour, and the former world No. 1 golfer may have dealt the Saudi-backed Super Golf League a devastating blow. Bryson DeChambeau issued his own statement shortly after, reaffirming his continued affiliation with the PGA Tour.

“I’ll play the PGA Tour as long as the greatest players in the world do,” DeChambeau said.
These are big setbacks for former golf legend Greg Norman, who is attempting to start a new league. According to the New York Post, Rory McIlroy, Brooks Koepka, Jon Rahm, and Collin Morikawa have all turned down the Super Golf League.

Playing on the PGA Tour has been lucrative for Johnson, Dustin, Bryson DeChambeau, and other leading players. The weekly tournament purses are good, and the endorsement opportunities are better.
Greg Norman, on the other hand, came up to suggest a new league backed by Saudi Arabian funds. Aside from large signing bonuses and tournament prizes, the league would provide a shorter schedule with team tournaments to 40 or more of the world’s best players.
The PGA Tour retaliated by increasing purses and establishing a $40 million Player Impact Program to reward big-name players. The group, according to the New York Post, was also planned to replicate the team competition. Johnson and DeChambeau may have been too quick to declare their support in this case.
According to the tabloid, a big PGA Tour sponsor offered spending a large sum of money to buy out six less-profitable tournaments and incorporate them into a calendar of eight lucrative team events controlled equally by the backer and the players. Commissioner Jay Monahan is said to be in favor of the concept.
The notion was shot down by Ed Herlihy, the chairman of the PGA Tour Policy Board, in October, according to the tabloid, who cited sources who claimed he insisted on the Tour keeping entire control.
“That is utter nonsense,” one of the report’s sources stated.

Phil Mickelson, a long-time PGA Tour player, has shown interest in joining the Super Golf League because to his discontent with the way the PGA Tour manages licensing and marketing. He believes that more money should have been pouring into the wallets of the players all along. He’s even gone so far as to brand the organization’s leaders “obnoxiously selfish.”
According to Golf Week, an unofficial Mickelson biography, expected around the time of The Masters Tournament or the U.S. Open, has additional scathing words from Lefty. Even Mickelson finds it difficult to believe that he would do business with a league funded by Saudi Arabian money.
Author Alan Shipnuck cites Mickelson as adding, “They’re frightening motherf****** to be involved with.” “We know they murdered (reporter Jamal) Khashoggi and have a terrible human rights record. People are executed for being homosexual in that country.
“With all of this in mind, why would I even think about it?” Because this is a once-in-a-lifetime chance to change the way the PGA Tour works. Because we, the participants, had no redress, they were able to get away with manipulative, coercive, and strong-arm techniques.”
In that respect, perhaps Johnson, Dustin and Bryson DeChambeau were premature in throwing their support behind the PGA Tour. According to the New York Post story, players didn’t have a voice in the plan for a team format.
According to a source, “this notion never even got to the players.” “They never heard it, they never had a chance to debate it, and they never had a chance to vote on it.”
If that’s the case, golfers may be doing themselves a disservice by not allowing Greg Norman to explain the Super Golf League to them. Their leverage could never be higher than it is right now.
