Dustin Johnson is a professional golfer and one of the greatest golfers of the moment. With his latest win at the PGA Championship, he’s cemented himself as the number one player in the world, and one of the best to ever tee it up. What makes Dustin Johnson so good? Where does he excel?
Dustin Johnson is having a pretty good year. He’s a major champion, he’s the current world number one, and he’s ranked #1 on the PGA Tour’s “Race to Dubai” points list. But on Friday, his fortunes took a turn for the worse at the PGA Championship. Johnson was penalized a shot for touching a wet ground with his club before hitting a ball. While the penalty is unusual, it’s not without precedent: Dustin’s younger brother, Austin, also committed a similar infraction in 2012 .
Dustin Johnson had an incredible run through the Masters Tournament, so much so that he was a favorite to win the PGA Championship. Unfortunately for DJ, a four-time major champion, he had to settle for what he could get instead, winning the tournament but not without controversy. While he was leading after the first round, he was involved in a one-stroke penalty that ultimately ended up costing him first place in the tournament, a title he could have had if he had played his shots properly. The 2021 PGA Championship weekend will be an eventful one, but world No. 1 Dustin Johnson will not be there. The South Carolina native was one of the players who missed the cut on Friday at Kiawah Island, as gusty winds made it difficult for everyone in the 156-player field, bringing his average score for the first two days at the Ocean Course to 75.15. Only 24 players played par or better for the final 36 holes. Leaders Phil Mickelson and Louis Oosthuizen (what year is this?) are playing at 5 under, and the tournament title is now all theirs. But D.J. will see us all on TV on Saturday and Sunday when he wins his second title in a row. Johnson also missed the Masters last month, the first time in his career he missed consecutive majors in the same year. It also means he made championship history, but not championship history.
Dustin Johnson is one of many top players who failed to make the cut at the PGA Championship.

But he made five misses in the next 14 holes, bringing his score for the week to eight misses. With the cut line projected at 5over, where it remained, D.J. gave himself another chance with an eagle on the par-5 seventh. But a bogey in the eighth round sealed his fate, and although he made birdies in the ninth round for a score of 74, he was one stroke short of a 6-over score. Of course, Johnson isn’t the only big name to miss out on the fun (and the pay) this weekend, as the second best player in the world, Justin Thomas, also missed out. J.T. made a late comeback, but also finished with a 6-over score. World number 4 Xander Schauffele also returns home after a 77 on Friday, following a 73 in the first round. Major tournament champions Adam Scott and Sergio Garcia were also eliminated.
Johnson became the first seeded player to miss consecutive majors since Greg Norman in 1997

May 2021 COMPARED TO: Dustin Johnson once played a 1,200-yard hole, and the score was tied with the expected. As noted, this is the first time in Johnson’s career that he has missed consecutive big games in a season. But it’s the first time overall since he missed the weekend at the 2016 PGA Championship at Baltusrol and then again at the 2017 U.S. Open at Erin Hills. D.J. missed the 2017 Masters after that unfortunate fall down the stairs. After missing the cut at Augusta last month and disappointing at Kiawah Island this week, Johnson became the first player on the official World Golf Ranking to miss consecutive cuts at the majors since 1997, when Greg Norman missed a weekend at the Masters and the U.S. Open.
DJ has finished no higher than 13th in his last seven starts
Since winning the Masters last November, Johnson has finished 11th or better in each of his next three competitions, including a victory on the European Tour at the Saudi International. But this is what he’s done in his last seven games:
- WGC Workday Championship: T-54
- The championship of the players: T-48
- WGC Match Play : T-28
- Master: MC
- RBC Heritage : T-13
- Valspar Championship: T-48
- PGA Championship : MC
Johnson was also scheduled to compete in the Byron Nelson tournament a few weeks ago, but withdrew due to knee issues. While this is only a guess, the problem may be bigger than we think. Is this latest piece the biggest deal in the world? No, of course not. But something was clearly wrong lately, because we were used to seeing DJ struggle every time he was on the field. We’ll have to wait and see how he reacts.Saturday at the PGA Championship was a day that Dustin Johnson was going to look back on fondly for years and years, as this was likely the day that he was finally going to win a major championship. But, as he’s become well known for, he blew up, and his shot on 18 went so terribly that he actually damaged a few greens that will make it a tough task to get the course ready for the Sunday finale..
