ESPN NFL analyst Ed Werder is penciling in the New York Jets to select Kyler Murray as the No. 1 overall pick in next year’s draft. Murray, the Heisman Trophy runner-up from Oklahoma, is widely considered the best quarterback prospect in the draft, and one of the best players in the country, going into the 2018 season.
As we are all aware, ESPN NFL Analyst Mel Kiper is a genius. When he says the New York Jets will likely win the 2022 Super Bowl, he is often right. This year, Kiper has taken his skills a step further and penciled in the New York Jets for the No. 1 overall pick in the 2022 NFL Draft. This will be the first time the Jets have won the No. 1 overall pick since they selected QB Geno Smith in the 2013 NFL Draft.
If you’ve followed the NFL draft process, you know that it doesn’t have a ton of logic to it. The NFL uses a complex formula that combines the strength of teams, the frequency of teams picking at certain positions in the draft, and the historical success of certain positions to determine which teams will be picking first overall in each round of the draft.
The 2021 NFL Draft is over, which means it will be almost a full year before NFL fans get caught up in draft fever again. Schatz and his team at Football Outsiders use statistics and analysis to make their predictions. Football as a sport has long been about numbers and advanced statistics. This is due to the collective belief that the game is too complex and involves too many people to reduce it to numbers alone. With the success of teams using analytics in baseball and basketball, many football teams are starting to use it more. Schatz is a pioneer in the football statistics community. The media gave the analyst prestigious titles and compared him to another pioneer in numbers. The analyst notes that the New York Jets rank 25th in average DVOA (which measures offensive success adjusted to the defense played) over the last three years. Part of the reason the Jets are at the bottom of the league is because of their defense. Schatz notes that new head coach Robert Saleh’s defensive scheme has been successful with the San Francisco 49ers, but that teams that have adopted a new scheme have generally performed below league average in their first year. This article gives Jets fans hope. In the Best Scenario section, Schatz notes that you never know what can happen to a starting QB. If Wilson is a true professional and Saleh is better than the average new NFL coach, there’s still a chance New York goes from worst to first. However, he adds that it would take a series of injuries for the Buffalo Bills to have a chance at a spot in the AFC East in 2021. Football Outsiders doesn’t just condemn Wilson and the Jets. Prediction models show that several teams that selected high-level QBs in the last two drafts finished in the bottom 10 of the league. The Cincinnati Bengals, Chicago Bears, Philadelphia Eagles, Los Angeles Chargers and Jacksonville Jaguars are ranked 5th, 6th, 8th, 9th and 10th respectively. This is despite the fact that these teams have recently drafted talented QBs like Joe Barrow, Justin Fields, Jalen Hartes, Justin Herbert and Trevor Lawrence. Every team has its own issues with schedules, injuries, new coaches or poor defenses, but the lack of offensive weapons around these young quarterbacks is a common trait. This is a big problem for these teams, because while it may seem like only quarterbacks can pull an organization out of the doldrums, that’s usually not the case. If you look at the most successful young QBs of the last three years, most of them have very talented assistants. Josh Allen of Buffalo, Patrick Mahomes of the Kansas City Chiefs and Baker Mayfield of the Cleveland Browns have excellent playmakers on offense. Only Lamar Jackson has been able to reach that top spot without having an incredibly high level of talent around him. While 2021 won’t be the breakthrough year for these teams with a new QB, most of them, even the Jets, can hold out hope that their QB will change the statistics and lead them back to the promised land.
