For the first time in 20 years, the NBA will return to the state of Indiana this season, and, since the Pacers have a new owner, who just happens to be Donald Trump, it’s going to be the closest thing the NBA has to a home game. However, the Pacers aren’t the only NBA team headed to Indiana this season. The NBA has also decided to expand its footprint outside of the United States for the first time in its history, and that team will be called the Indiana Pacers—only it won’t be in Indiana.
Jalen Rose was recently on the Dan Le Batard Show on Miami radio station WAXY 965 AM, and he had a few things to say on the subject of the NBA’s ‘All-Star’ voting. Rose, who has been a staple on ESPN’s NBA Countdown for years, has long been a critic of the results of the public vote for the All-Star starters, which he says are heavily weighted toward players from small markets. But Rose really jumped the rails in his latest comments, which came during a discussion of the All-Star starters for the years 2014 and 2015. “Kevin Love has gotten a lot of attention because he’s playing with LeBron [James] in Cleveland,” Rose said. “That’s why
The relationship between basketball superstars Kevin Love and LeBron James is a fascinating one. Both players have been perceived as LeBron’s sidekick for some time, with Love providing a nice complement to LeBron James’s talents on the offensive end. Love and LeBron have won multiple championships together, with Kevin Love being a key cog in a great Cavs’ team, while LeBron has dominated the NBA on his own. With the impending return of LeBron James to the NBA, Love’s role with the Cavs is expected to be diminished. A trade for Kevin Love from the Cavs is being rumored, although it is unlikely that he will be traded.. Read more about how old is jalen rose and let us know what you think. Less than a month before the COVID-delayed Tokyo Olympics, the U.S. basketball team has finally made its 12-man selection, and ESPN’s Jalen Rose doesn’t sound too excited about it. At least one member of the corps. After it was announced that Cleveland Cavaliers star Kevin Love was on the team, Rose commented on the surprising choice. He said the five-time NBA star was only on the team because of the symbolic play and that USA Basketball was afraid to send an all-black team to Japan.
But here’s the thing. USA Basketball has long sent only black teams to the Olympics. Love is only the second white player to play for Team USA at the Summer Games since John Stockton was the only white player on the team to win gold in Atlanta in 1996. And who was it? That would be Kevin Love in 2012.
But Rose didn’t stop there.
Then he went on a little rant about how Christian Laettner was preferred over Shaquille O’Neal and Alonzo Mourning when he was the only college player selected to the famous Dream Team in 1992. But that point is absolutely ridiculous, because Laettner was one of the best players of all time and really deserved to be included.
Jalen Rose says Kevin Love made it to the U.S. national team just because of his tokenplay
For those who missed Rose’s recent comments on Love on Jalen & Jacoby, which you can listen to in the video above, here’s what the former member of the Fab Five had to say:
Kevin Love is on the team for the symbolic match. Don’t be afraid to put together an all-black team to represent the United States of America. I’m disappointed in that. Anyone who has followed the league this year knows that Kevin Love didn’t have a great season, wasn’t the best player on his team, and didn’t necessarily belong on this list.
Jalen Rose on Kevin Love
Okay, I get Rose’s point about Love not having a great 2020-21 season in Cleveland. He only played in 25 games for the Cavs and scored just 12.2 points per game, his lowest average since his debut season and only fifth on his team.
Rose said Phoenix Suns center Deandre Ayton should probably take Love’s place. But here’s the thing. Ayton hails from the Bahamas and has represented his country in international competitions in the past. Yes, he can represent the United States in the future if he decides to become a citizen and then gets special permission from FIBA to play on the US basketball team. And there’s precedent for it: Hakeem Olajuwon, born in Nigeria, became an American citizen in 1993 and won a gold medal with Team USA at the 1996 Atlanta Olympics.
So Ayton isn’t even an option. Are there any players more deserving than Love? Absolutely. And while I could certainly make a long list of names, that was clearly not Rose’s main goal. It has been suggested that Love was given a place on the team solely because of his race, which is absurd because all but one of the American basketball teams that participated in the Olympics had an all-black team.

As mentioned in the introduction, John Stockton was the only white player on the 1996 U.S. basketball team to win gold in Atlanta, and Love has since become the only white player to make the Olympic team, at the 2012 London Games. In case Rose needs a refresher, here’s a rundown of all the US Olympic basketball teams of the 2000s.
- 2000: Sharif Abdur-Rahim, Ray Allen, Vin Baker, Vince Carter, Kevin Garnett, Tim Hardaway, Allan Huston, Jason Kidd, Antonio McDyess, Alonzo Mourning, Gary Payton, Steve Smith
- 2004: Carmelo Anthony, Carlos Boozer, Tim Duncan, Allen Iverson, LeBron James, Richard Jefferson, Stephon Marbury, Sean Marion, Lamar Odom, Emeka Okafor, Amar’e Stoudemire, Dwayne Wade
- 2008: Carmelo Anthony, Carlos Boozer, Chris Bosh, Kobe Bryant, Dwight Howard, LeBron James, Jason Kidd, Chris Paul, Taishan Prince, Michael Redd, Dwayne Wade, Deron Williams
- 2012: Carmelo Anthony, Kobe Bryant, Tyson Chandler, Anthony Davis, Kevin Durant, James Harden, Andre Iguodala, LeBron James, Kevin Love, Chris Paul, Russell Westbrook, Deron Williams
- 2016: Carmelo Anthony, Harrison Barnes, Jimmy Butler, DeMarcus Cousins, DeMar DeRozan, Kevin Durant, Paul George, Draymond Green, Kyrie Irving, DeAndre Jordan, Kyle Lowry, Clay Thompson
- 2021: Bam Adebayo, Bradley Beale, Devin Booker, Kevin Durant, Jerami Grant, Draymond Green, Jrue Holiday, Zach LaVine, Damian Lillard, Kevin Love, Chris Middleton, Jason Tatum.
Does USA Basketball really have a problem with sending an all-black team to the Olympics? And by the way, it took me about 20 seconds to find all these lists, Jalen. No reason.
Rose says Christian Laettner preferred Shaquille O’Neal and Alonzo Mourningwhen they were selected to the Dream Team.
.
In addition to his comments about Love and symbolism, Rose also addressed the fact that former Duke superstar Christian Laettner was chosen to the Dream Team over the two men selected ahead of him in the 1992 NBA Draft.
I also know how kindly Christian Laettner was treated when he got his chance to be part of the Dream Team, even before Shaq and Alonzo (Moorning). But they made sure a college player could play in the game and gave him preference.
Jalen Rose on Christian Laettner, who was named to the Dream Team in 1992, ahead of Shaquille O’Neal and Alonzo Mourning
Missed again, Jalen.
As far as their NBA careers go, yes, Shaq and Mourning were the best players. But if you look at their academic careers, Laettner has an advantage. He played in four consecutive final fours for the Blue Devils, won two national championships and played in 23 of 24 possible NCAA tournaments during his Durham career, winning 21 of them.
For those who don’t remember or weren’t alive at the time, Laettner dominated Shaq in their two college encounters and also played well in the Moorning game. All three performed well in the 1991-92 season when the Dream Team was formed, but it was Laettner who became the consensus college player of the year and led his team to the national championship.
Who beat Duke this year? Yes, it’s Jalen Rose and the Michigan Wolverines.
Looks like someone is still a little bitter.
