In 2020, Taylor Heinicke didn’t know if he would play in the NFL again. Now the Washington football team hears his name in the same sentence as Kurt Warner.Normally by this time we write that it’s too early to think about Heinicke, Old Dominion’s former quarterback, being inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame alongside Warner. But tell that to former Washington linebacker Fred Smoot.

Maybe this is the part of the NFL offseason where we all desperately want football. Maybe Smoot is spending too much time on a day of fun and food on April 4. Juli to think clearly.
Regardless, the former Washington defender has a lot to say about Heinrich and his potential ceiling. During a recent appearance onBMitch and Finlayon 106.7 The Fan in Washington, Smoot compared the quarterback’s journey from XFL to playoff game in less than a year to Warner’s journey from Arena League to Super Bowl.
The Rams had every position. They had wide receivers. They had Marshall Faulk. They had linemen. They had a defense. And then, out of nowhere, along comes this Kurt Warner, who shouldn’t have started, and doesn’t give the job back.

Of course, Smoot doesn’t assume that Heinicke, who threw two touchdowns and three interceptions in eight regular season games, will succeed Warner in the Hall of Fame, does he?
Heinicke seems to be of that opinion, Smoot said. He has this: You know what? If I ever get this job, I will never turn it down.
The confusion goes too far with this equation
Smoot has praised his former team, and you have to give him credit for that. But with all due respect to Heinicke, let’s set aside any comparison between him and the Hall of Fame quarterback.
The biggest difference between Heinicke and Warner is experience. When Warner took over the Rams in 1999, he was already a successful passer in the Arena League. Despite being a very talented quarterback at ODU, Heinicke threw 58 NFL passes in 2015-19 and wasn’t even on the field in the XFL.
If Heinicke starts the 2021 season as Washington’s starting quarterback, it would be his first experience in that role since 2014, his final season at ODU. After all, Warner started for the Iowa Barnstormers in 1996 and 1997. The lack of recent experience could be a major obstacle to Heinicke’s development as a potential starting quarterback.
Comparison of the Troubles, however, leads to an interesting and amusing fact. When Warner took over the Rams in 1999, he played a full season at the age of 28. Heinicke will be the same age throughout the 2021 campaign.

That’s not to say Heinicke can’t be a warrior of his generation. He’s certainly talented enough to be a backup quarterback for that long.
Even the worst quarterbacks in the NFL belong to a rare club. You will not receive random invitations to auditions or contract offers. Even Tim Tebow, who benefited from his close relationship with Urban Meyer, got a contract because of his game shape and desire to keep his career alive.
Heinicke already had an established relationship with Washington head coach Ron Rivera, and he used that to get his chance in 2020. When given the chance to start, he performed well in Washington’s loss to Tom Brady and the Buccaneers in the NFC Round in January. With the immortal Ryan Fitzpatrick as his mentor, the former quarterback who didn’t make the team could be Washington’s savior under center.
Warner is one of the greatest Cinderella stories in modern sports history. Of course, it would be interesting to see Heinicke become a reliable starting quarterback in Washington, even if his career doesn’t end with a Super Bowl ring and a bronze bust in Canton, Ohio.
