Aqib Talib was a 12-year NFL veteran who appeared in five Pro Bowls. He was prolific everywhere he went, but two places in particular stood out.
Talib said that he had a great time playing for the New England Patriots and the Los Angeles Rams. Bill Belichick and Sean McVay, he feels, created cultures that appreciated the players. Talib recently spoke with Colin Cowherd on The Colin Cowherd Podcast on why the Rams’ locker atmosphere is comparable to the Patriots’.
“I’ve got to give Sean some credit, dude,” Talib replied. “When you come there, Sean really makes you feel at ease.” He’s quite clear about what he expects of you. When it comes to his messaging, he reminds me a lot of Bill [Belichick]. He’s a straight shooter. How he handles the athletes and how he manages his facility.”
In New England, Belichick runs a tight ship. While the atmosphere in Los Angeles may be a touch more relaxed, Talib believes McVay still has the ability to demand respect from his players.
“He treats you like a professional,” Talib said. “He doesn’t micromanage and treats you like a mature man.” It’s the way Sean controls the place.”
Aqib Talib only spent one season with Bill Belichick and two with Sean McVay. He does not think, however, that it is a coincidence that players can join such teams and have an immediate impact.
In his five years as head coach of the Rams, he has done a lot.

When Les Snead, the general manager of the Los Angeles Rams, hired Sean McVay as the team’s new head coach in 2017, he created history. When McVay signed the deal, he was 30 years and 11 months old, making him the youngest head coach hired in the modern period.
He was the offensive coordinator for the Washington Football Team from 2014 to 2016, before moving to LA. McVay served on the same coaching staff as Kyle Shanahan of the San Francisco 49ers and Matt LaFleur of the Green Bay Packers.
The product of Marietta, Georgia, is in his sixth season with the Rams and has already made an impact on the famous team. With McVay at the helm, the squad has a remarkable 55-26 record.
When the 36-year-old led the Los Angeles Rams to a 13-3 record and the NFC West title in 2018, he drew a lot of attention. The Rams made it to the Super Bowl, but were defeated by Bill Belichick’s Patriots.
It may seem sacrilegious to compare the two coaches, but McVay still has a long way to go to achieve half of what Belichick has accomplished in his 27 years as a head coach. Nonetheless, Aqib Talib claimed that the Rams’ head coach is creating a culture that works, even if it differs from the one in New England.

The Los Angeles Rams’ Super Bowl run in 2018 was spectacular, but the squad in 2021 is more complete. Any member of the squad will tell you that this is the most talented bunch they’ve ever been a part of.

Sean McVay is in an excellent position right now. The Los Angeles Rams are preparing for a rematch with the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship Game. Kyle Shanahan’s team has recently had the Rams’ number. With that type of skill, you can never rule out LA. The Rams are a Super Bowl contender in the making. They have a potent attack, a tough defense, and a fantastic coach.
McVay may be in his early twenties, but he’s wise beyond his years. Returning to the Super Bowl will be the next logical step in his long and illustrious career.
