How the Buffalo Bills Clinch a Spot in the NFL Playoffs in Week 17

Going into Week 17 of the 2021 NFL season, the NFC playoff scenario is quite apparent. Only two spaces remain after the four division champions and one Wild Card club have sealed their berths. The AFC, on the other hand, remains a total mystery. Only the Kansas City Chiefs have already secured a playoff berth, leaving six positions open. So, as the Bills Mafia enters the last week of the season, the issue for the Bills Mafia is: how can the Buffalo Bills secure a playoff berth in Week 17?

In Week 17, here’s how the Buffalo Bills clinched a postseason spot.

Next week, the Bills have a chance to secure a postseason spot. Here’s how it works, according to @ESPNStatsInfo:

1. A win with a BAL loss OR 2. A win with an LV loss and a LAC loss

The Buffalo Bills’ 2021 season has been a rollercoaster.

The club began the season as a Super Bowl favorite, but was surprised in Week 1 by the Pittsburgh Steelers. The club then went on a four-game winning streak, outscoring opponents 156-41 in the process.

Buffalo went 3-5 in its next eight games before reversing course late in the season, winning its last two games to finish 9-6 and first in the AFC East.

The Bills are now in a good position to secure a postseason berth in Week 17 when they face the Atlanta Falcons at Orchard Park, NY, despite the turbulence of the season.

If the Bills and Falcons tie, the Buffalo Bills will win in one of three complicated situations. These intricate manipulations may be seen on NFL.com.

The crucial thing to remember is that the Buffalo Bills will only clinch in Week 17 if they win and receive some assistance. The Bills have no chance of clinching a postseason spot this week if they lose.

A defeat or tie by the Baltimore Ravens (vs. the Los Angeles Rams) or a loss or tie by both the Los Angeles Chargers (vs. the Denver Broncos) and Las Vegas Raiders would benefit Buffalo this week if they can beat the Falcons (vs. the Indianapolis Colts).

The Bills will be back in the playoffs if Week 17 plays out in any of the scenarios mentioned above. Then there’s the matter of whether the Buffalo Bills can capture the AFC East title in Week 17.

In Week 17, can the Buffalo Bills clinch the AFC East?

The Buffalo Bills won the AFC East for the first time since 1995 last season. For the first time since the 1990-91 seasons, they want to top the division when the dust settles in back-to-back seasons. These championships were the Bills’ last two in a four-year reign of terror in the AFC East (1988-91).

The Bills Mafia’s bad news is that they will not be able to capture the AFC East in Week 17.

Buffalo, on the other hand, has complete control over the remaining two weeks of the season. They will win the AFC East if they win both of their games against the Falcons and the New York Jets. Even if the New England Patriots win, the Bills’ 5-1 record against the AFC East will be enough to break the tie with the Patriots’ 4-2 record.

The Bills can still win the division if they lose to the Falcons then defeat the Jets. However, only New England loses a game.

Things become difficult if the Bills defeat the Falcons but lose to the Jets. In this scenario, even if the Patriots lose to the Miami Dolphins in Week 18, the Bills still win the AFC East. If the Patriots lose to the Jaguars in Week 17 and win in Week 18, they will win the division because their AFC East records will be matched, and the tiebreaker will be their overall record against the AFC, which the Pats will have.

To summarize, if the Bills win, they will win the division. When you lose, things become nasty.

Almost every Buffalo Bills playoff scenario starts with a victory against the Atlanta Falcons in Week 17. The game will take place in Buffalo’s Highmark Stadium, where the Bills have a 4-3 record, which is virtually comparable to their 5-3 away record.

If Buffalo has been erratic this season, winning and losing often, Atlanta is the poster franchise for alternating good and terrible. The club opened the season with back-to-back defeats and then lost two in a row in Weeks 10 and 11, but the remainder of the season has been an even split of wins and losses.

The Falcons, on the other hand, have fared better on the road, finishing 5-3 vs. 2-5 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium.

The Bills had the league’s third-best scoring offense and defense entering this game. In these areas, the Falcons are ranked 25th and 28th, respectively.

All of these numbers and statistics point to the Bills making quick work of the Falcons on Sunday. That said, it’s evident that the Falcons can sometimes step up and play like a playoff club, while the Bills may play down and look like a high draft selection team on any given Sunday.

If the Bills have genuinely returned their 2020 form and are on the verge of a postseason run, putting up 30-plus points and crushing the Falcons early in Week 17 would be evidence.
