This season in the NBA, there has been some controversy made over the subject of fitting in. With the NBA Draft having just passed, the league’s players are preparing to enter the next stage of their careers. While some players may be looking for new opportunities and to move on from their present teams, others are likely still looking to stay and contribute to their current teams.

For ten years, Allen Iverson was a player for the Philadelphia 76ers. He has been the undisputed alpha dog since the franchise selected him as the best player in the 1996 NBA Draft.

When he returned to Philadelphia in 2009, Iverson expected business as usual.

He had a surprise.

Allen Iverson was also an icon among other NBA players

In his first stint with the Philadelphia 76ers, Allen Iverson was the target of much criticism. Criticized for his amount of shots, injuries, unwillingness to share the ball, etc.

There is some truth in this criticism. Iverson was throwing the ball around a lot. In his last eight seasons in Philadelphia, he averaged nearly 25 shots per game. But then again, who else would get the ball? Eric Snow? Iverson was a four-time scoring champion, NBA MVP in 2000-01 and played in 11 consecutive All-Star games.

Iverson was also influential off the field. It was his style that led the NBA to institute a dress code for players who did not wear a uniform. In fact, this dress code forced the players to be much less urban (to use a polite term). The standards became looser, but Iverson was influential enough to be credited (or blamed) for the dress code.

Tense meeting with Thaddeus Young

Allen Iverson went from the Denver Nuggets to the Detroit Pistons and the Memphis Grizzlies from 2006 to 2009. Iverson was fired by Memphis after three games, after which he returned to the Philadelphia 76ers in December 2009.

Iverson has passed away, but to the fans, he was still a star. Even in his final season, fans elected him starter in the 2010 All-Star Game. That’s impressive for a player who was fired by the 76ers less than a month after that game.

When he returned to the 76ers, he felt right at home. One of his new teammates said Iverson might have been too comfortable. As he said in a recent interview on the The Crossover NBA Show podcast:

The first day he came in, he had all this stuff in my locker because he sat next to me at practice. I went in, checked and put his things next to his locker. The first thing he said was that it was a joke, but he said: Don’t you ever touch my stuff again, you young bastard.

And I started laughing like it was the funniest thing in the world. It was like he was joking about it. But this was the first time we spoke or interacted. We’ve been super cool ever since. And I, a young man, had to defend myself: No, buddy, you put your stuff in your locker and I’ll put mine in my locker! And he said: This locker room is mine. I built this cabinet. And I said: You’re right, but you haven’t been here three years.

Thaddeus Young

From 2009 to 2010, Young was a third-year player at Georgia Tech. The Philadelphia 76ers took him with the 12th pick. in the 2007 NBA Draft. Young only became a starter in the 2008-09 season.

He is still active with the Chicago Bulls, where he spent two seasons. Young is under contract for $14.19 million next season, with $6 million guaranteed. Coincidentally, Young played 14 seasons – as many as Allen Iverson did during his Hall of Fame career.

The on-court partnership between Young and Iverson lasted just 25 games and 933 minutes. According to NBA Stats, the 76ers have gone 10-15 in those games. In those 25 games, Iverson averaged 13.9 points, 4.1 assists and 3.0 rebounds in 31.9 minutes per game. But for a team looking to build a game around young veteran Andre Iguodala, Iverson was not the right choice.

Defender Jrue Holiday, then a 19-year-old first choice, set the tone. For Iverson, leaving the 76ers meant the end of his NBA career. In the 2010/11 season he played three matches for the Turkish club Besiktas.

But you have to hand it to Thaddeus Young for standing up to Allen Iverson. This is a future Hall of Famer with a serious following.
