I’m a white guy. You can take that for granted. I’m also a guy who is often in conversation with other white guys. So, I’m pretty used to being in conversations with other white guys. I know what it’s like to get a lot of “Uh-huhs” and “Yeah, you know what I mean”s. I’ve also experienced the “I’m not in those conversations” conversation.

It’s a cliché, but it’s true: we all talk way too much. Sure, some people are better at it than others, but even the most well-meaning people are guilty of over-sharing. It’s hard to know what’s going through someone else’s head, especially when you’re talking to someone you’ve just met. And it’s even harder to know if they’re listening to you or not. Seriously, why wouldn’t they?

Gregg Popovich hopes to win a gold medal with the U.S. basketball team at the Tokyo Olympics this summer; he doesn’t care about the other benefits of having some of the best players in the world on the same team.

However, Team USA has become a laboratory for the formation of super teams, and it’s entirely possible that one will be formed this summer. Popovich doesn’t care.

NBA super teams formed because of the US basketball team

Team USA in itself is a great team, as they have some of the best players in the world. But it also led to the formation of super teams in the NBA.

For example, the team that won gold in 2008 played a key role in contracting LeBron James, Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh to the Miami Heat in 2010.

Carmelo Anthony could have also been part of this great summer of 2010, had his contract with the Denver Nuggets not lasted longer than James, Wade and Bosh’s with their teams.

It would probably be me and LeBron, somewhere D-Wade and Bosh, Anthony said on episode of The Woj Podon the 22nd. February 2021. After the Olympics, the subject was on everyone’s lips: Where are we going? Where can we work together? Where can we meet? It’s so good, we want this feeling forever. We want the experience of playing with other great players – we want that. Where can we go? … Before that, everyone in the NBA had their own team for a long time.

As ESPN notes, James and Kevin Love then joined the Cleveland Cavaliers from the 2012 American team in 2014. Deron Williams ended up playing with them in Cleveland, too. Kevin Durant and Andre Iguodala also ended up playing together for the Golden State Warriors, while James Harden and Chris Paul played together for the Houston Rockets.

Kevin Durant, a product of the 2016 USA team, joined the Golden State Warriors that same summer along with Draymond Green and Klay Thompson and the Brooklyn Nets in 2019 along with Kyrie Irving. DeMarcus Cousins joined Durant, Green and Thompson on the Warriors, and DeAndre Jordan played alongside Durant and Irving on the Nets.

Gregg Popovich doesn’t care about super teams

Given Team USA’s track record, head coach Gregg Popovich was recently approached about the possibility of forming super teams during the Tokyo Olympics.

But he said it was none of his business.

No matter what players talk about – you talk about super teams – it doesn’t even occur to you, Popovich said, according to the Boston Herald. I don’t have those conversations with them – they have conversations about what they want in the world. It’s none of my business.

It’s safe to say Popovich won’t limit player recruitment during the Olympics. That means we could see players paving the way for future super teams this summer.

Which Team USA basketball players can make or be part of a super team?

It’s possible that several players from this year’s Olympic team will join NBA teams in the next year or two.

There are whispers that Damian Lillard wants to leave the Portland Trail Blazers, and Bradley Beal has been the subject of trade rumors with the Washington Wizards for several years. Maybe Bam Adebayo can talk one of these guys into joining the Miami Heat, given Miami’s financial flexibility? Or maybe Lillard and Beal can team up somewhere else.

On the other hand, Kevin Love could become one of the most recruited players because of his situation with the Cavaliers. He could be the guy who signs with a contender like Kevin Durant’s Brooklyn Nets, Devin Booker’s Phoenix Suns, Jrue Holiday’s Milwaukee Bucks or Draymond Green’s Golden State Warriors at a minimum veteran salary.

It could even be that unexpected players decide to leave their team based on this summer’s experience. All options will be considered.

The US basketball team will be interesting to watch at the Tokyo Olympics. You have a great chance of winning a gold medal. But the time the players spend together could also lead to the creation of the next great NBA super team.
