It seems like we have been hearing a lot of nonsense in the sports media to this point in the 2012 Olympics. The most recent is that because the USA women’s basketball team lost on Sunday in the finals the USA men’s basketball team shouldn’t even try to win the gold medal. That is a very silly argument, and one that makes no sense whatsoever. Yes, it is the USA men’s team who is representing the USA in the Olympics. It isn’t just the women who are represented. The men play for the country, and the women play for the team. That doesn’t mean the men don’t care about the gold medal, and that doesn’t mean the women can’t defeat the men if they have to.

Jimbo Fisher has a well-earned reputation for being a man of few words, and we’ve all heard the story of him momentarily losing his cool during a press conference in the past. If you throw in the fact that the Florida State athletic director has a reputation for being a little “straight-laced” and that he had a not-so-great football season in 2014, one would be forgiven for assuming Fisher was a volatile guy.

Cade Cunningham, one of the top prospects in the 2021 NBA Draft, is set to receive a big payday soon. NBA player and podcaster J.J. Redick recently asked the big guard about his possible big rookie contract. Cunningham then laughed and told Redick that he was familiar with those numbers. If Cunningham becomes the No. 1 pick, his new contract is expected to surpass that of 2020 MVP Anthony Edwards, who is worth more than $40 million.

Cade Cunningham is the number one pick in the 2021 NBA Draft

Whether it’s the Houston Rockets, Detroit Pistons, Orlando Magic or another lottery team, Cunningham will likely be selected as the #1 pick. Cunningham is a 6-foot-4 point guard who weighs 1.80 pounds. His length and playing style remind many of young superstar Luka Doncic of the Dallas Mavericks. He grew up in Texas and spent the last two years of high school at Montverde Academy in Florida, a high school with a renowned basketball program. In his senior season, Cunningham was a five-star recruit and the recipient of the 2020 Naismith High School Player of the Year award. According to OKState.com, he chose Oklahoma State College over traditional powerhouses like Kentucky, North Carolina and Duke. In his only season as a Cowboy, the Texan averaged 20.1 points, 3.5 assists, 6.2 rebounds and 40 percent 3-point shooting.

Cade Cunningham told JJ Redick he was checking his newnumbers.

Cunningham recently appeared on Redick’s podcast, The Old Man and Three. The two men, along with Redick’s co-host Tommy Alter, had an in-depth conversation to get to know the future first-round pick. At one point early in the interview, there was talk of a salary cap for NBA rookies. Redick asked Cunningham to answer the question honestly: Have you looked at what the number one university gets? I knew it was coming, Cunningham said with a laugh. Anyway, he was introduced to me. So there’s no way I can miss it. But I’m not angry at all, you know that. I’m not angry at all. Redick also talked about the incredible amount of money some of his former high-profile young teammates are making in rookie contracts. He mentioned New Orleans Pelicans players Jackson Hayes, Lonzo Ball and Brandon Ingram in the interview. He also noted that the total duration of 2021 will be about four years, which will generate more than $40 million.

How do NBA rookie contracts work?

The salary scales of rookies determine the contracts of rookies in the NBA. This is a predetermined sliding scale that recruits drafting in each slot can subscribe to. Each season there is a base number for each location, and rookies can sign for 80% of that number or 120% of it. The rookie contract has two guaranteed years, two years of team options, and a qualifying offer in the fifth year in which rookies become restricted free agents. According to Spotrac, 2020 first choice Anthony Edwards’ contract guarantees him $20 million in his first two years, which is 120% of his base rookie value this year. His third-year option is $10.7 million and his fourth-year option is $13.5 million. Since teams rarely pick the No. 1 for less than four years, the deal is essentially a guaranteed $44.2 million contract. If Cunningham becomes the first pick in the 2021 NBA Draft, his four-year contract is expected to be worth more than $45.5 million. We will know more about where Cunningham will land and exactly how much he will win when the NBA Draft 2021 lottery opens on Tuesday, June 22. and the NBA Draft 2021 on Thursday, July 29.
