RJ Barrett, the top-ranked prospect in 2019 according to ESPN and Rivals, is playing well enough that New York Knicks have even been discussing a trade for him. He’s only 21 years old and has yet to play competitively outside of Canada.

RJ Barrett is a 21-year-old basketball player who was drafted by the New York Knicks last summer. He was selected seventh overall in the 2018 NBA draft, and has been projected to be one of the best players in the league.

In 21-Year-Old RJ Barrett, the New York Knicks Have the Superstar They Went Looking for Last Summer

The New York Knicks acquired free-agent guard Evan Fournier and lured aging point guard Kemba Walker back to the Big Apple last summer in search of some superstar, difference-making talent to add to their budding team.

In the shape of electric 21-year-old forward RJ Barrett, the Knicks’ next difference-making superstar may have been on their roster all along.

Barrett, like the Knicks, has been on a tear of late and seems to be on the mend after a rocky start. The Knicks have won eight of their last eleven games since Christmas Day, including five of their last seven in January, to move above.500. Barrett has five 30-point games this season, with three of them coming in the previous three weeks, and the Knicks are 5-0 in those situations.

Barrett is swiftly establishing himself as the New York Knicks’ go-to scorer in crunch time.

RJ Barrett, who is just 21 years old, is finally developing into the player the Knicks envisioned when they selected him third overall in the 2019 draft.

Barrett, an athletic left-hander, has averaged 24.6 points, 5.1 rebounds, and 3.3 assists in seven January games while hitting 47 percent of his shots and 48.7% of his 3-point attempts. He had 32 points and four 3-pointers in a win over Dallas, then he had 31 points and three more 3-pointers in a win over San Antonio. With a banked 3-pointer at the buzzer to overcome the Boston Celtics in overtime, he even salvaged his poorest game of the month.

Barrett had a fantastic comeback performance after battling sickness and injuries in a dreadful December. Barrett’s improvement came after tough-guy head coach Tom Thibodeau questioned his devotion and ambition to develop his game.

According to the New York Post, “he got rolling last year when he began coming in every night to shoot.” “There’s no such thing as part-time employment; you have to do it all the time.” So, head back to the gym and start grooving your shot again. You’ll start making more 3s if you shoot a lot of them.” Thibodeau was correct, as it turned out.

RJ Barrett’s performance has become a major indicator of New York’s success.

Barrett’s outstanding performance in recent weeks has aided the Knicks in reaching.500 for the first time since December 2. They still have a lot of work to do, however, as they currently sit in 10th place in the Eastern Conference rankings.

How important has the third-year pro been for the Knicks this season as a barometer? He’s averaging 18.7 points per game in his 20 appearances, shooting 45.4 percent of his shots and 42.3 percent from 3-point range. Barrett has averaged 14.6 points per game in 16 defeats, shooting 36.8% from the field and 27.1 percent from three-point range.

Barrett, like the Knicks, has just gotten out of his December rut and regained his rhythm and flow.

Barrett said in a postgame press conference on Saturday, “It feels wonderful for sure, but that’s what we’re striving for.” “We had a difficult month in December, but things are beginning to improve now.” It’s entertaining to be a part of.”

Could Zion Williamson join the Knicks now that Cam Reddish and RJ Barrett have reunited?

Barrett was reunited with his old Duke University teammate Cam Reddish when the Knicks acquired him from Atlanta last week. That move spurred rumors that Duke’s other first-round selection in 2019 — superstar power forward Zion Williamson — could desire to play with Barrett and Reddish in New York eventually. Of course, there’s no foundation for such speculation, and Williamson should be concentrating only on getting fit and returning to the New Orleans Pelicans’ lineup.

In the real world, Barrett has established himself as the Knicks’ obvious second choice behind Julius Randle, the NBA’s reigning Most Improved Player award winner. Barrett has a good chance of winning the honor this season.

Barrett is providing the Knicks with considerably more than an unreliable Fournier and a crippled Walker have been able to provide. The Knicks could have discovered that the superstar difference-maker they were looking for was already on their roster if they had been more patient last summer.

ESPN.com provided the statistics.
