Jarrett Allen’s injury has opened up a spot for rookie Darius Garland more than anyone expected. The guard out of Vanderbilt has been scorching hot and challenged the Rockets’ James Harden for Rookie of the Year with his scoring ability on offense, as well as lockdown defense on defense.

Jarrett Allen's Frustrating Injury Has Helped Ignite a Ridiculous Darius Garland Run

In Cleveland, there is a new monarch.

Okay, that’s a slight to LeBron James, but Darius Garland has made The Land his home. This year, the entertaining Cleveland Cavaliers guard has become one of the NBA’s breakthrough performers, helping the Cavs get into the thick of the Eastern Conference playoff battle.

However, injuries have kept Cleveland from reaching its full potential this season, and one to All-Star big man Jarrett Allen came at an inopportune moment.

However, it hasn’t been all bad. Allen’s absence has also shown one thing: Darius Garland is on the verge of becoming a star.

The Cavaliers are on the verge of missing out on the playoffs. Due to the strength of the Eastern Conference this season, they are in sixth place with a 41-31 record, one game ahead of the seventh-place Toronto Raptors. The NBA Play-In Tournament is for teams ranked 7–10 in the rankings, and the Cavs will likely want to avoid it as much as possible.

So, given how crucial this current stretch is to their season, losing All-Star big man Jarrett Allen is a huge disappointment.

On March 6, Allen broke his finger in a game against the Raptors. He hopes to be back in time for the playoffs.

Overall, Cleveland has fared well without their star player. The Cavs are 5-4 without him, including the game in which he was injured.

Darius Garland, on the other hand, has been on a roll.

For the Cavs, Darius Garland is on a historic run.

The Cavs’ offense has depended on three guys throughout the season. While the team has other players capable of huge nights, such as Lauri Markkanen, the resurgent Kevin Love, and Caris LeVert, the three major weapons have been teenagers Darius Garland, Jarrett Allen, and Evan Mobley.

Since Allen, who was an All-Star this season with Garland, has been out, the point guard has had to step up.

This season, Darius has averaged 21.4 points and 8.6 assists. However, in his previous ten games, he has averaged 25.7 points and 12.2 assists.

Those figures are stunning on their own, but they’re much more astonishing when you consider his age.

According to Basketball Reference, Garland became the youngest player (22 years and 54 days old) to average at least 25.0 points and 12.0 assists during a 10-game stretch of a season. The only other players to accomplish the feat at 22 years old were Hall of Famers Oscar Robertson (22 years and 97 days) and Isiah Thomas (22 years and 294 days), and future Hall of Famer Chris Paul (22 years and 311 days).

That’s quite remarkable company to be in, and Garland can utilize this hot streak to help the Cavs make some noise in the postseason.

Once Jarrett Allen returns to the lineup, Darius Garland won’t have as much to do. His confidence, on the other hand, is already sky-high, so he can now continue this triumph into the playoffs.

This Cavaliers squad, when healthy, can compete with anybody. Garland is proving to be a legitimate superstar, and the frontcourt duo of Allen and Mobley might be one of the greatest in the league.

Cleveland also has a strong defense unit. Its size, which includes Allen, Mobley, and Lauri Markkanen, as well as the presence of a defensive standout in Isaac Okoro, makes it tough for opponents to score. When the defensive intensity ramps up in the playoffs, this might be vital.

Overall, Darius Garland is having a great season right now. Once Jarrett Allen and his intimidating presence return to the lineup, he has a potential to push the Cavs to new heights.

Basketball Reference provided the statistics.
