The NBA Western Conference Finals feature Stephen Curry vs. Luka Doni, a prime-time showdown between the Dallas Mavericks and the Golden State Warriors. If the series comes down to a single shot with the time ticking down, one of these two superstars will almost certainly take it.
On ESPN’s First Take, former NBA player JJ Redick was asked whether he would rather have Doni vs. Curry with the ball in his hand. Redick turned around, backed off his answers, and termed the whole line of inquiry “stupid” immediately after offering his answer and an impassioned defense of it.
With the game on the line, JJ Redick says he’d choose Luka Doni of the Dallas Mavericks over Steph Curry.
JJ Redick, a former NBA sharpshooter, recently made news for his heated remarks on ESPN’s First Take. This Monday, he did it again when answering a question regarding Stephen Curry vs. Luka Doni.
With the Dallas Mavericks facing the Golden State Warriors in the Western Conference Finals, Redick discussed with presenter Stephen A. Smith and current NBA player Patrick Beverly whether he would like Curry or Doni to take the game-winning shot.
Curry is, without a question, the superior pick, according to Smith and Beverly. Redick, on the other hand, was outspoken in his support for his (short) old colleague Luka Doni over the Warriors sniper:
We’re talking about the year 2022 right now. With the game on the line, who would you rather have with the ball? It’s unmistakably Luka Doni. It’s unmistakably Luka. Guys, think about everything you have to do — this isn’t a dig at Steph — think about everything you have to do. All of the persons who must be involved in order for Steph Curry to get a shot at the conclusion of the game. Consider all the things you have to do. You know what you’re supposed to do with Luka, right? You hand the ball on to him.

Whether you agree or disagree, Redick presented a compelling case for Doni’s ability to generate his own shot against Curry’s need to go off screens to get free. He debated Smith and Beverly honestly and honorably, and many considered him to have won the debate.
Then Redick went on social media and slandered himself.
Following the performance, Reddick responded on social media.
Hey Chip. I’m not sure whether you’re aware of this… However, on these programs, you are asked a stupid question, such as this one, and then asked to respond. In a “or” question, you can’t choose both. Then you must provide evidence to support your position. That’s TV. https://t.co/LhMZNPARON

JJ Redick’s swift and smooth transition from NBA player to NBA commentator is due to his analytical, intelligent, and outspoken nature. These attributes stand out whether he’s on his podcast, The Old Man and the Three, on First Take, or as a guest on a variety of other basketball programs.
That’s why Redick’s response to a random Twitter user earlier in the day, in which he invalidated his whole Stephen Curry vs. Luka Doni argument, was so startling.
Unverified Twitter user tagged Redick and called him a clown in a film of Redick delivering his Curry vs. Doni on First Take (with an emoji).
Redick, shockingly, replied by ripping back the veil on sports talk TV and mocking both the format and the topic itself, tweeting:
Hey Chip. I’m not sure whether you’re aware of this… However, on these programs, you are asked a stupid question, such as this one, and then asked to respond. In a “or” question, you can’t choose both. Then you must provide evidence to support your position. That’s TV.
JJ Redick’s ‘First Take’ responses
Not only was the former Duke standout extremely sensitive in his response, but it also jeopardized his reputation as a commentator.
Fans will find it difficult to trust that any of Redick’s future responses are genuine. Redick said that he just chooses a side on television and that he may not believe what he says on the programs he appears on. That is a major blemish on his analyst career.
So, unlike Redick, let’s select a side for the final shot when it comes to Doni vs. Curry.
With the game on the line, Steph Curry takes on Luka Doni.
The worst aspect about JJ Redick’s reneging on his response in the Luka Doni vs. Steph Curry discussion, apart from ruining his reputation as an NBA commentator, is that he was correct!
With the game on the line, would I choose Curry or Doni above practically any other player? Yes, absolutely.
If I had to choose only one, I’d go with Luke Legend.
Curry is without a doubt one of the finest shooters in NBA history, capable of hitting a game-winning shot from anywhere on the field at any time. However, he hasn’t been at his best in the last seconds of the game.
Curry hit his first NBA buzzer-beater in a 105-103 Golden State Warriors victory against the Houston Rockets on January 22, 2022. According to ESPN, the former Davidson guard has five game-winning baskets with fewer than five seconds remaining, but his first actual buzzer-beater didn’t come until four months ago.
Doni, on the other hand, has made game-winning baskets look routine in only four NBA seasons. (against. Los Angeles Clippers 8/23/20, vs. Memphis Grizzlies 4/14/21, vs. Boston Celtics 11/6/21)
Aside from the numbers, Redick made the greatest case before withdrawing his response. Doni is a 6-foot-7, 230-pound powerhouse with exceptional handling and change-of-pace skills. He has the ability to generate whatever sort of shot he wants at any moment.
Curry, as good as he is, is 6-foot-2 and weighs 185 pounds. With an athletic defender on him, it will require a team effort to free him up for a clear look at the basket.
So, regardless of what “Chip” says, I’ll choose Luke in the Doni vs. Curry discussion.
