In a recent interview with Yahoo Sports, NBA star Luka Doncic admitted to having made some bad choices in his life, including gambling on NBA games through offshore betting websites. The Dallas Mavericks point guard was able to sign a new $207M contract with the team on Tuesday, and while this may be a good thing for the Mavs, Lakers, and the likes, it also means that Luka’s colleagues in the league are not too happy about it.

Luka Doncic was arrested for gambling last week, according to reports from Spanish media outlet El Confidencial . Doncic was playing an online game called “Winning Eleven” in which he bet $1,700 on the outcome of a random draw, with the goal of cashing out. The game has been banned in Italy, and the law enforcement agency in the Spanish city that Doncic was playing the game in also banned it.. Luka Doncic has earned the NBA’s most paid supermax rookie agreement. His five-year, $207 million contract with the Dallas Mavericks is the most money a rookie has ever collected at the end of their first contract. This is due to Doncic’s incredible, unprecedented achievements while still only 22 years old. JJ Redick, the silky Slovenian’s former teammate, demands the money he owes him now that he’s been paid.

Luka Doncic is making NBA history, and he recently signed a deal to prove it.

With the 2017 collective bargaining agreement, the rookie supermax extension, popularly known as the Designated Player rule, was implemented. It permits teams to sign a player to a contract for up to 30% of the salary cap if they match certain criteria.

No player has been eligible for this rookie contract extension until now. Doncic became the first player to be eligible for the rookie supermax after making First-Team All-NBA in two of his first three seasons.

For the 6-foot-7 point forward, making history is nothing new. According to Mavs.com, Doncic was the youngest player in EuroLeague history to earn both the regular season and the Final Four MVP.

Doncic continued to make history when the Mavericks selected him third overall in the 2018 NBA Draft. He earned Rookie of the Year, was one of three players under the age of 21 to be named First Team All-NBA, and was the first European-born player to start an All-Star Game.

Doncic has made NBA history in his first three seasons, averaging 25.7 points, 7.7 assists, and 8.4 rebounds per game. There’s no doubt he’ll continue to do so when he plays out this supermax extension and likely signs a couple more down the road.

JJ Redick wants his money now that Doncic has been paid.

On the court, there is no denying Doncic’s greatness. Off the court, though, his card-playing abilities and proclivity for timely payment of gambling bills have been called into question, owing to former teammate JJ Redick.

For a brief period of time, Reddick was Doncic’s teammate. The former Duke sharpshooter was traded to the Dallas Mavericks soon before the 2021 trade deadline. The 6-foot-3 guard only played 13 regular-season games for the teams and none in the playoffs due to a heel injury. He became a free agency after averaging just 4.4 points in 11 minutes per game during his stint in Dallas.

Apparently, Redick’s injuries didn’t stop him from hanging out with Doncic and the rest of the team and playing cards. Following the revelation of Doncic’s $207 million rookie supermax agreement, the 37-year-old veteran turned to Twitter to criticize him:

He still owes me $1700 in credit card debt. Please contact me via @CashApp @luka7doncic.

Redick’s dig at his old colleague was presumably in good fun, but in any case, Doncic can now afford that and a lot more.

The Dallas Mavericks are racing against time to maintain their star player.

Former Mavericks players such as new coach Jason Kidd, assistant general manager Michael Finley, and special adviser Dirk Nowitzki, as well as Mavericks governor Mark Cuban, new general manager Nico Harrison, director of player health and performance Casey Smith, and former Mavericks players such as new coach Jason Kidd, assistant general manager Michael Finley, and special adviser Dirk Nowitzki, all flew to Slovenia for the triumphant presentation of the contract to the franchise’s star.

While the attitude is currently jubilant, it is possible that this will not be the case in the near future. With this deal, the Mavericks have more time to create a legitimate contender around Luka Doncic.

The squad has made the playoffs the past two seasons, but has lost both times to the Los Angeles Clippers. Dallas led the series 2-0, then 3-2, but was unable to advance this year. Some of this is undoubtedly due to the general lack of skill surrounding Doncic, and some of it may be due to Doncic’s tumultuous relationship with teammate Kristaps Porzingis.

This offseason, the team has already been very busy. Josh Richardson was traded away by the new front staff, which was overseen by Harrison. Tim Hardaway Jr. and Boban Marjanovic were re-signed, and free agents Sterling Brown and Reggie Bullock were signed. The team did, however, miss out on Kyle Lowry, their prime target.

The Mavs’ ability to locate a trade partner for Porzingis will be the true test of the offseason in Dallas. If they can’t, their $207 million star may have to look elsewhere for his next contract extension.
