The Bengals selected quarterback Joe Burrow first overall in the 2020 National Football League Draft, thus they anticipated him to be excellent. Last year, the former LSU Tiger had a strong start as a rookie before suffering a catastrophic knee injury in Week 10. Burrow is back for year two, and he’s looking as fantastic as ever. That isn’t simply anecdotal evidence either. Burrow’s sophomore season has started off better than Peyton Manning, Kurt Warner, and only the legendary Dan Marino.

Dan Marino, unlike Joe Burrow, did not go first overall in the 1983 draft. He wasn’t selected in the top ten, and he wasn’t the best quarterback available. Alternatively, the fifth.
Marino was one of six quarterbacks selected in the first round in the famous 1983 NFL draft, and one of seven Pro Football Hall of Famers. John Elway (Baltimore Colts, No. 1), Todd Blackledge (Kansas City Chiefs, No. 7), Jim Kelly (Buffalo Bills, No. 14), Tony Eason (New England Patriots, No. 15), and Ken O’Brien were the quarterbacks selected before the Miami Dolphins chose the Pittsburgh signal-caller No. 27 overall (New York Jets, No. 24).
In addition to Elway, Kelly, and Marino, HOF players Eric Dickerson (Los Angeles Rams, No. 2), Jim Covert (Chicago Bears, No. 6), Bruce Matthews (Houston Oilers, No. 9) and Darrell Green (Houston Oilers, No. 9) were also selected in the first round (Washington, No. 28).
Marino was the Dolphins’ no-doubt starter heading into year two after a strong debut season in which he started nine games and threw 20 touchdowns to only six picks.
He didn’t let us down.
Marino passed for 5,084 yards and 48 touchdowns in his second of 17 NFL seasons, both of which were league highs. In addition, he led the NFL in attempts (564), completions (362), yards per attempt (9.0), yards per game (317.8), Quarterback Rating (108.9), and many other statistics in 1984.
Marino was named to the Pro Bowl, was a first-team All-Pro, and earned the NFL MVP Award as a result of the team’s 14-2 record. That season, he also made his lone Super Bowl appearance, falling 38-16 to the San Francisco 49ers.

Dan Marino got out to a fast start in his all-time great second season and never looked back. Joe Burrow of the Cincinnati Bengals is putting up similar statistics in 2021.
Burrow is just the fourth second-year quarterback in NFL history (Super Bowl era) to throw two or more touchdown passes in each of his first four games this season. In addition to Marino, the only other two quarterbacks to achieve the accomplishment were Peyton Manning of the Indianapolis Colts and Kurt Warner of the St. Louis Rams, both in 1999.
During this time, Manning went 2-2 on his route to a 13-3 record. Warner was 4-0 to open the season, on route to a 13-3 record, the NFL MVP Award, and a Super Bowl victory. Manning and Warner, on the other hand, only threw one touchdown pass in Game 5.
Only Marino had made it to five games with two or more touchdown throws before Sunday. On his route to a 5-0 record in Week 5, the former Pitt Panther threw three touchdown passes.
Burrow now joins Marino as the only second-year quarterback to throw two touchdown passes in his first five games, as he tossed two against the Green Bay Packers in Week 5 to increase his season total to 11.
However, the Bengals’ quarterback still has a long way to go to match Marino’s entire sophomore season streak. After a Week 11 victory against the Philadelphia Eagles, the Hall of Famer didn’t pass for fewer than two touchdowns in a game.
Burrow and the Cincinnati Bengals were defeated by the Green Bay Packers in a heartbreaker.

Burrow joined Marino, Manning, and Warner in scoring at least two touchdowns in each of their first four games, all while leading his Cincinnati Bengals to a 3-1 record.
Burrow’s team fell to 3-2 following a heartbreaking OT defeat to the Packers, matching Marino’s two touchdowns in five games.
Burrow completed 26 of 38 passes for 281 yards, two touchdowns, and two interceptions in a game that was tight throughout. Burrow seemed to be knocked out of the game by the Packers’ defense halfway through the second quarter, but he returned on the following series without missing a play. According to ESPN, he also went to the hospital after the game with a potential throat injury.
Despite his outstanding gritty effort, Burrow was not the game’s major talking point. It wasn’t even Ja’Marr Chase, the Bengals’ rookie wideout, or Aaron Rodgers, the Packers’ veteran captain.
The kickers were the major takeaway.
Cincinnati Bengals rookie Evan McPherson missed two late game-winning field goals. Mason Crosby of Green Bay also missed an early extra point, two late regulation field goals, and one overtime kick before hitting the game-winning field goal.
In the end, the Packers’ veteran-laden squad did send the Bengals home losers in devastating manner. However, the team’s supporters must be ecstatic with Joe Burrow’s performance so far this season, particularly since his statistics put him in the company of Dan Marino.
The Bengals’ next opponent is the only club in the NFL with a worse record than them. They play the Detroit Lions in Week 6, who are coming off two last-second defeats on field goals of 50 yards or more, including an NFL record 66-yarder in Week 4.
