The Philadelphia 76ers’ Doc Rivers and Daryl Morey aren’t the only ones who think they can persuade Ben Simmons to remain in the city despite his strong trade requests. Surprisingly, Sixers forward Joel Embiid shares these sentiments.
Much has been said about Embiid and Simmons’ relationship and whether they can coexist on the court. Similarly, in a Twitter outburst earlier this month, Embiid hinted that Simmons may not be “made” for criticism. Despite this, the star big man is one of many attempting to keep a tense situation together.
Embiid’s example of leadership is admirable. It’s also a fruitless endeavor.
The Sixers can engage Ben Simmons, according to Joel Embiid, provided they get him among his teammates.
On First Take Wednesday, Doc Rivers delivered a lengthy interview in which he reaffirmed the team’s goal and expectation for Ben Simmons to play this season. He’s not the only one who believes Philly can pull it off.
According to Kyle Neubeck of the Philadelphia Voice, Embiid thinks the Sixers and Simmons can work things out. According to Neubeck, Embiid “privately maintained” that the Sixers can persuade Simmons to return if they make a concerted attempt to get him among teammates.
It’s intriguing that Embiid would maintain the same level of intensity in the front office as he does in public. He might just as easily opt to ignore the issue or express his displeasure with Simmons’ trade demands.
Instead, Embiid is doing his job as a leader for a Sixers club that desperately needs it. This is a good personal growth that may pay off in the long run for the group. Embiid, on the other hand, is definitely squandering his energy in the eyes of Ben Simmons.
The 76ers have placed themselves in this predicament.
After attempting to move Ben Simmons throughout the summer, the Sixers have little reason to believe he will show up for camp or ever play for the club again.
This summer, Philadelphia has done little to quell the rumor that Simmons is on his way out. Daryl Morey has marketed him around the league to a number of clubs. Sure, the asking prices have been ridiculously high, reflecting the team’s opinion of his abilities.
But that’s just half the story. The truth remains that Morey and his colleagues might have simply responded, “We’re just listening.” That was not the case.
Simmons has said that he would never play for the Sixers again. Why should he blink now, given Philly’s lack of confidence in his abilities? He’ll also be paid half his pay on October 1st, before he’ll be penalized for missing games. Most individuals in his situation would, in all likelihood, adopt the same route.
For a long time, the Simmons-Sixers relationship has been on shaky footing. It doesn’t seem to be recoverable at this point. Embiid would be better off focusing his efforts elsewhere.
At this point, Embiid should concentrate on himself.

Joel Embiid worked hard this summer to quiet his detractors, putting himself through a grueling fitness regimen to remain fresher at the conclusion of games. He also expanded his attacking capabilities.
As a consequence, he had a season worthy of an MVP. Embiid led the team with 28.5 points, 10.6 rebounds, and 2.8 assists per game. He was more efficient than ever, shooting 51.3 percent from the field and 37.7 percent from beyond the arc, both career highs. The 27-year-dominance old’s in the playoffs was unaffected by a partly damaged meniscus.
Embiid may already be the greatest center in the league, but reigning MVP Nikola Jokic will most likely disagree. Regardless, he seems to be striving to improve every year.
When the Sixers signed Embiid to a hefty contract this summer, they made it obvious that he is the franchise’s face. He should focus all of his efforts on becoming stronger and making more progress on the floor.
Philadelphia will definitely have to deal with the Ben Simmons issue. But Embiid shouldn’t spend so much time trying to persuade Simmons that they can make it work with the current bunch. Perhaps the scenario would be different if Embiid and Simmons were great friends. That isn’t the case at all. Aside from his first trade request, Simmons has had very little communication with any member of the Sixers organization.
At this point, Embiid’s only option is to concentrate on his own game and let the chips fall where they may.
