The Lakers are reportedly looking to acquire a hometown star this summer in order to get back to the NBA Finals and they may have just found their man. According to CBS Sports, the Lakers are reportedly in talks to acquire Kevin Love, giving the team their first legitimate superstar since the departure of Kobe Bryant, who retired in 2016.
The Los Angeles Lakers are reportedly interested in making a blockbuster deal for hometown hero LeBron James, according to a report by Yahoo’s Adrian Wojnarowski. That report comes just weeks after news that the Lakers will partner with New York Knicks star LeBron James on a new sports and entertainment venture. If the Lakers do indeed plan to present James with an offer that the NBA Finals MVP would likely dunk on, they should expect to be waiting a while before their offer even comes to fruition.
Not willing to give up the L.A. market, the Lakers have reportedly reached out to hometown star James Harden, according to a report by Jeff Zillgitt of USA Today. The Los Angeles Lakers have made it no secret that they would like a reunion with former Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant, but what about a hometown hero, Kevin Love? With the recent news that Love is not only likely to leave the Cleveland Cavaliers, but is looking for a max contract, the Lakers could be the team to offer him a deal.. The Los Angeles Lakers are believed to be looking for a point guard improvement, and a blockbuster deal for a local product may be in the works.
This offseason, the Purple and Gold will face a number of obstacles. Among those set to become unrestricted free agents are Dennis Schroder and Andre Drummond. Kyle Kuzma’s career with the Lakers may be in jeopardy, and the Lakers in general need more impact players to complement LeBron James and Anthony Davis.
The Los Angeles Lakers are looking to add a point guard to their roster.
This summer, adding more playmaking guards seems to be at the top of LA’s wish list.
The Lakers will be “on the hunt” for a veteran point guard this summer, according to Marc J. Spears of The Undefeated. That would seem to suggest that they want to move on from Schroder, who allegedly turned down a contract extension earlier this summer.
In his debut season in Los Angeles, Schroder had a mixed bag of results. The 27-year-old scored 15.4 points per game while dishing out 5.8 assists and grabbing 3.5 rebounds. He failed to create enough space, though, shooting 33.5 percent from outside the arc.
While Schroder’s 5.8 assists per game rank third among his career, the Lakers may need a more explosive threat who can create plays in transition or in the half court. Rob Pelinka, the general manager, may be interested in one of the NBA’s most dynamic guards.
Russell Westbrook may be acquired in a blockbuster deal by the Lakers.
Russell Westbrook has had a lot of ups and downs over the last two seasons.
When the Oklahoma City Thunder started rebuilding in earnest in 2019, Westbrook was moved to the Houston Rockets. Westbrook was moved to the Washington Wizards after his relationship with James Harden fell apart due to discontent with the Rockets’ culture.
Is it possible that The Brodie is on the move once more?
According to Spears, the Lakers are interested in Westbrook and may make a big deal to get him back to Los Angeles. There have been “talks” about the Lakers arranging a sign-and-trade deal including Schroder, Kuzma, and Talen Horton-Tucker, according to Spears.
In Los Angeles, Westbrook would be an interesting match. Given his inefficiency from beyond the arc, he wouldn’t offer much space. He’d, on the other hand, pull James and Davis away from the ball and look for transition chances. A trio of Westbrook, James, and Davis would certainly terrify opponents if Pelinka could find a way to add additional shooting.

The Lakers may hope to get Westbrook via a trade, but tango requires two.
There are many reasons why the Wizards might be interested in a trade including Schroder, Kuzma, and Horton-Tucker. Schroder may like Washington’s fast-paced attack. Kuzma may have more flexibility to develop his own game, while Horton-Tucker has the potential to develop into a future backcourt player.
Money, on the other hand, might be a problem. According to TalkBasket.net, Schroder wants between $100 and $120 million in free agency, according to Armin Andres, Vice President of the German Basketball Federation. Then there’s Horton-Tucker, who, according to the Gilbert Arenas Provision, could sign an offer sheet for a maximum of four years and $82 million. Finally, in the first two seasons of his contract deal, Kuzma will earn $13 million, with a player option in the third year.
Washington may ultimately feel compelled to get rid of Westbrook’s salary. But do the Wizards really want to be encumbered by debts to the three players mentioned above? Is it also a good idea to trade Westbrook after the two seemed to establish a friendship last season?
It’ll be interesting to see whether the Lakers can create a splash, but it seems like they’d go to tremendous lengths to get Westbrook.
