Larry Bird enjoyed a successful NBA career in which he became an icon of the game and won three Finals MVP awards. Larry Bird, the NBA legend and Hall of Famer, made $24 million during his career. He said that he was perfectly content with having some coke, some beer, something to eat and a nice place to live.
It’s all too easy for us mortals who aren’t Hall of Fame sportsmen to fall victim to the cliché “it’s the simple things in life.” Despite earning more than $20 million throughout his NBA career with the Boston Celtics, Larry Bird, one of the most recognized sportsmen of all time, lives by that adage.
Larry Legend stated that all he need was a few drinks, a nice meal, and a gorgeous home.
(As well as, of course, a basketball.) That should go without saying.)

Bird was a 13-year veteran of the league, winning a staggering number of honors both individually and as part of a team.
His Boston Celtics won three NBA titles and dominated the league for a decade, sharing the title with Magic Johnson’s Los Angeles Lakers.
Bird was the Rookie of the Year in 1979-80 (beating Magic Johnson), a 12-time All-Star, and a 10-time All-NBA team member.
Three times he was chosen to the All-Defensive team.
He also won three MVP awards and two Finals MVP awards.
The Legend, on the other hand, was never one for frivolous spending.

You’d excuse Larry for blowing part of his hard-earned cash on three or four flashy automobiles and a couple of mansions.
That, though, was never Bird’s style. After all, he was The Hick from French Lick.
Following his retirement, the Hall of Famer spoke with Boston Globe reporter Bob Ryan about his career and achievements. As Ryan put it,
Even if his financial account has grown, his fundamental spending patterns have not altered. His wish list of creature amenities is still rather small.
He claims, “The one fundamental thing I desire is a clean, pleasant place to live.” “Apart from that, money isn’t a major thing to me.” It’s easy to say when you have some, but I really mean it. I don’t need much more if I have enough money for a Coke, a drink, a meal, and a decent place to live.”

Bird was a brilliant talent, but he remained a rather average guy throughout his career.
Basketball was always Bird’s first focus.

“Fame and riches may come and go.” Isn’t it a different idiom?
Not if you’re Larry Bird, as Ryan went on to say:
Larry Bird, now 180 days into his (forced) retirement, confesses, “I still dream about basketball.” “Three or four times every week,” she says. Magic is still there in my dreams, believe it or not.”
He has left It behind, but it will not abandon him.
