Few NBA players have ever matched LeBron James’ accomplishments. However, there is one record that King James does not possess. Only five players have won it, and the only reason he hasn’t is because of his on-court selflessness.
Although James is a fantastic scorer, his desire to help others means he will probably never join a group that includes Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Julius Erving, Michael Jordan, and Steph Curry – at least not in his opinion.

As an NBA player, LeBron James has achieved everything possible. He’s managed to live up to the astronomical expectations that accompanied him from St. Vincent-St. Mary High School to the league. He turned his accomplishment into a thriving company. However, there is one spot in the NBA record books where James isn’t included.
Wilt Chamberlain, Kareem Abdul Jabbar, Julius Erving, Michael Jordan, and Steph Curry are the only players in NBA history to win multiple championships, MVP awards, and scoring crowns. Even putting Erving on the list is a bit of a hack, since you have to count his ABA numbers to meet the requirements.
Other players were on the verge of making the list. George Mikan, Kobe Bryant, Shaquille O’Neal, and Bob McAdoo each earned one MVP award; Bob Pettit won one championship; while George Gervin and Adrian Dantley’s scoring prowess never resulted in a championship. The absence of James from the list is the most shocking of all. He has a lifetime scoring average of 27 points per game, although his only scoring championship came in the 2007-08 season.
For a player of James’ caliber, attaining that title is more a question of desire than anything else. “If I truly wanted to win the scoring championship [champion], I could accomplish it every single year — every single year – I could actually do it,” James stated in 2010. James has never advertised himself as a goal scorer, yet he is a natural.
James was dubbed the “next Michael Jordan” by scouts as a teenager, but his approach to the game is more akin to Magic Johnson than anybody else. When he was younger, his propensity for passing, especially in critical situations, attracted a lot of criticism. He’s always said, though, that he’s a facilitator first and a scorer second. James’ ambition to be a team player became something to cherish after he added titles to his résumé.
However, James’ ability to score cannot be overstated. As a 20-year-old in his second season, he averaged 27 points a game. Despite this, it is this aspect of his game that he has worked on the most during his career. Until his tenure with the Miami Heat, he didn’t establish a reliable jump jumper or post moves.
James could not be stopped once he matched his athleticism with a comparable level of skill. At his final two seasons in South Beach, he had an effective field goal percentage of above 60%. His 51-point performance in Game 1 of the 2018 NBA Finals was a masterclass in shotmaking.
James is presently ranked third all-time in NBA scoring and is on pace to surpass the record in the next two years. Not bad for a man who describes himself as “not a scorer.”
What current NBA players might possibly be added to this list?
In terms of the initial list, just a few players have a possibility to contribute to it in the future. Kevin Durant is the most apparent choice. The second MVP award is the only item lacking from his résumé. Given how good he played in the playoffs, the forward will be one of the favorites to win the Stanley Cup next season, assuming he remains healthy.
Youth is on the side of the other hypothetical possibilities. At the age of 26, Giannis Antetokounmpo has already won two MVP awards and a title. However, it’s impossible to envision the NBA’s leading scorer having trouble shooting the ball.
