While we’re on the subject of what NFL players do when they aren’t playing football, let’s look at some of the things that NFL quarterbacks do when they aren’t on the field…

Before the Detroit Lions agreed to send five-year, $135 million contract to Matthew Stafford, general manager Bob Quinn had to make sure that the deal would be worth it. And in order to make sure that the contract was good enough, Quinn made sure that the contract was in line with Stafford’s worth. In the end, Detroit was able to get a good deal for Stafford, who would be getting $27.5 million per year under the five-year deal.

Since the Detroit Lions selected Matthew Stafford first out of the University of Georgia in 2009, he has been a top ten NFL quarterback, at least in terms of talent. Unfortunately for him, the Lions and Lions fans, that talent never translated into wins for the franchise.

The Lions fired coach Matt Patricia after the 2020 season and began a complete rebuild. This left Stafford unclaimed. The team traded him to the Los Angeles Rams, but according to their head coach Sean McVay and San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan, things could have turned out very differently if not for a twist of fate in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico.

Sean McVay fires Detroit Lions’ Matthew Stafford after 12 long years

When an organization selects a QB at number one, they expect a Super Bowl or at least a playoff appearance to follow. That was certainly Detroit’s plan in 2009, when the team recruited the star of the Georgia Bulldogs.

Only three defeats in the first round of the playoffs followed in 12 seasons. Stafford leaves Detroit with impressive stats, but with a 74-90-1 record as the starting QB.

During his time in the Motor City, he accumulated 45,109 yards, 282 touchdowns, 144 interceptions and a 62.6% completion percentage. In Week 17 of the 2020 season, Stafford became the fastest player in NFL history to play his 165th game, according toDetroit Lions PR. In his career, he has 45,000 passing yards. Then he also reached the fastest 20,000 (71 games), 30,000 (109 games) and 40,000 (147 games) passing yards.

In the 2021 offseason, Stafford was offered for sale and McVey and the Rams approached him. The new Los Angeles franchise sent disappointing No. 1 pick Jared Goff to Detroit along with the 2021 third round pick and the 2022 and 2023 first rounds, reports CBS Sports.

McVeigh and Shanahan have long roots. Shanahan hired McVay as a quality coach in 2010. In fact, he was the personal assistant to the offensive coordinator when Shanahan was in charge under his father in Washington.

Shanahan joined McVay on the Flying Coach podcast () with Sean McVay and Peter Schrager ( ), and they talked about how they work together, what they look for in a QB and their philosophy on game production. The conversation eventually turned to Stafford.

Shanahan said he was also interested in Stafford. The Niners’ coach said he had studied Stafford extensively and that he was better than I thought. He was the man, and to me he is underrated.

Shanahan also revealed that he was vacationing with his wife in Cabo when McVey and Stafford were also at the resort and struck a deal at another hotel. Shanahan wanted to make it a game, but it didn’t work.

In the podcast, he spoke with McVay and Schrager about how the weekend went from his perspective:

I was trying to get involved. … I remember being so stressed out on Saturday and we finally spoke to someone, it was seven o’clock at night and they said: No, there will be nothing until tomorrow at the earliest. This is how you can end your evening. And so do I: Okay, I’m done. I put down the phone, spoke to Mandy: Let’s go out for dinner, have a drink. …. Half an hour later, I get a call from my friend: I’m just telling you, if you want Stafford, you have to contact him right away. ….. I turned the phone on and that was it. It wasn’t funny.

The Rams’ new quarterback ranks sixth in ESPN’s 2021 quarterback rankings

The Top 10 QBs list was compiled after a survey of more than 50 NFL employees.

-Aaron Rodgers beats Patrick Mahomes
-Duck wins tiebreaker with Lamar
-Herbert is already a top 10 QB
-Stafford, Allen make serious leapshttp://t.co/pNBNQaoOpA

The combination of a talent like Stafford and an innovative attacking style – perhaps the most innovative in the league – gets people excited.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler has released his list of the NFL’s top 10 quarterbacks for 2021, and Stafford is already up from last year. In 2020, he was the 10th QB in the league on that list. He moved up to 6th place. That places him one spot behind Josh Allen and ahead of Dak Prescott, Lamar Jackson, Justin Herbert and Kyler Murray.

Fowler writes in the article:

And one has to assume that Sean McVay’s friends are not just about coaching. Stafford moves up four spots just because his swap with the Rams gets him closer to the bigs.

Matthew Stafford is 33 and doesn’t have a lot of miles left to go, but given the longevity of Pocket Pass players these days, he may have another five years or more ahead of him. With McVay leading the way in the helmet, he could easily surpass the success of the team he found in Detroit in a few years.
