New York Giants' Meeting With Unorthodox Prospect Proves No Option Is off Limits

Fans of the New York Giants have been waiting for this year’s NFL Draft for longer than most. The G-Men have two top-10 selections, No. 5 and No. 7, after last year’s draft-day deal and subsequent season-ending disaster.

With two first-round choices, general manager Joe Schoen has a plethora of talents to choose from, as well as roster voids to address. So, between now and the draft in Las Vegas next month, Schoen is weighing all of his choices. Even if that means interviewing candidates who don’t seem to be natural matches on the surface.

Kyle Hamilton of Notre Dame has visited with the Giants.

There are a few spots that spring to mind when thinking about New York’s draft needs. Big Blue fans would be furious if the squad didn’t return from Vegas with at least one starting-caliber offensive lineman. In addition, particularly if a James Bradberry deal happens, New York might (and should) attempt to improve its pass rush and cornerback group.

So, why are the Giants considering bringing in a safety?

According to Pete Sampson of The Athletic, the Giants were one of the teams to have a Zoom meeting with Notre Dame free safety Kyle Hamilton. The Seattle Seahawks and New Orleans Saints, who own picks No. 9 and 18 respectively, have also interviewed the Irish star.

Hamilton, a 21-year-old safety, isn’t your normal defender. The Georgia native, who stands 6-foot-4 and weighs 220 pounds, has a unique mix of size, speed, and agility, making him one of his class’ top overall prospects. Hamilton produced 138 tackles and eight interceptions in 31 games for South Bend, where he played all over the field as a covering safety or linebacker.

With Hamilton’s skill, it would be shocking to see him finish outside of the top ten. The Detroit Lions were projected to choose the junior with the second overall choice, according to ESPN’s Mel Kiper. Jamal Adams, the sixth-overall choice of the New York Jets in 2017, was the last safety to be taken in the first ten picks. Prior to that, you’d have to go back to Mark Barron, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ seventh-round pick in 2012.

For the New York Giants, all options are on the table.

Given the Giants’ existing roster, Hamilton being drafted in the first round would be surprising. Even after releasing Logan Ryan, New York’s safety duo of Xavier McKinney and Julian Love is good enough to allow the team to look elsewhere for the time being. Especially with right tackle still being a major weakness on the offensive line.

The G-Men, on the other hand, are demonstrating two things by meeting with Schoen. First and foremost, they’re exercising their right to speak with any and all candidates while doing due diligence on each. Second, and more significantly, everything and everything is on the table when Vegas opens its doors next month.

Few prospects can compare to Hamilton in terms of talent. Why wouldn’t the Giants want to bolster their roster? Even if New York’s needs are bigger elsewhere, adding a jack-of-all-trades to the defense isn’t going to make things worse. If anything, it will provide a mediocre D with the playmaker it needs to advance.

Having two high choices comes with a number of advantages. One of them is New York’s ability to utilize one choice to address an urgent need while utilizing another to pursue the best player available. So the Giants may still go after an offensive lineman before drafting a player like Hamilton.

It’s possible that meeting with Hamilton will be insignificant. After all, by the time the draft comes around, New York will have met with a slew of prospects. Despite this, Schoen is properly weighing all of his choices as he manages a major renovation.

Either of the Giants’ two first-round choices might be traded.

As things stand, the G-Men have the option of sitting tight, grabbing two great talents, and using their other seven selections on anybody they choose.

Alternatively, they may sell and make much more money this year or next.

New York is willing to move one of its top two selections, according to Ralph Vacchiano of SNY. The idea would be to acquire several draft selections, including a first-round pick in 2023, similar to what previous GM Dave Gettleman accomplished last year by moving from No. 11 to No. 20 and acquiring the Chicago Bears’ first-round pick in 2022.

The Giants would then have even more draft selections for this year and next, allowing them to address many needs. Plus, depending on where their new first-round selection is, they might still get someone like Hamilton later in the draft.

It’s also possible that New York is gathering draft selections now in order to make a run at a top quarterback next year. Given the present status of the roster, though, its performance should assure a high draft pick in 2023.

For Giants supporters worldwide, optimism springs eternal with the boundless possibilities that lie ahead.
