22-year-old Serbian superstar center Nikola Jokić had a strong first half of the 2016-17 NBA season, leading the league in points. He’s been nominated for the league’s Most Valuable Player award as a result. Early last night, he became the youngest player to ever win this award, edging James Harden and Stephen Curry. In the process, he also raised his value to over $240 million, making him the most valuable player in the NBA.
Dominant as ever, Nikola Jokic finished the regular season as the leading vote getter for the 2018 NBA MVP award, edging out the likes of James Harden, Russell Westbrook and Anthony Davis in the landslide. The MVP award is awarded to the league’s most valuable player, and it’s a testament to Jokic’s power and greatness that he ended up in the top three.
In an effort to take advantage of the NBA’s new collective bargaining agreement, this week’s MVP award winner took a 5-year, $341 million contract with the Minnesota Timberwolves. Jokić, a 6’11” power forward/center from Montenegro, made a name for himself when he led his country to the EuroBasket 2011 championship. His performance was so impressive that he was later selected to the FIBA World Cup 2010 All-Tournament Team.
Denver Nuggets superstar Nikola Jokic won more than just a trophy by being voted NBA MVP. He also opened the door to Nuggets owner Stan Kroenke’s safe. The MVP title earns Jokic a contract extension with the NBA designated veteran, commonly known as a supermax deal. Jokic may not sign such a contract until after the 2021-22 season, but it looks like the 26-year-old Serbian center point guard (yes, you read that right) has a chance to become MVP. Why would he wait? The NBA collective bargaining agreement requires it.Denver Nuggets can’t offer Nikola Jokic a super max contract yet
After being named MVP, Nikola Jokic can now sign a super max contract in the post season of 2022 or 2023. Jokic is ineligible to play this offseason, missing 1 year of 7 service. – Bobby Marks (@BobbyMarks42) June 8, 2021 Under the terms of the last NBA draft, ratified in 2017, Nikola Jokic is not eligible for a Super Max contract extension this summer because he does not have the required seniority. To earn this title (and a maximum salary equal to 35% of the salary cap), a player must have seven or eight seasons behind him. He should also have one or two years left on his current contract, and he should stay with the same team his entire career. The exception to the latter criterion applies to players traded during their first contract or during their first four seasons. Jokic was a second round pick in 2014, so he never had a rookie contract. Jokic has two years left on the five-year contract he signed with the Denver Nuggets in 2018. The Nuggets owe Jokic about $30.5 million for next season and about $32.5 million for the 2022-23 season. It therefore meets the criteria. He’s never played for another team, so he’s good in that regard as well. Jokic, however, just finished his sixth season. As MVP of this season, Jokic could be eligible for the Super Max at the end of his seventh year in 2022.
How does a player become eligible for the Supermax and what does that mean for Jokic?
. In addition to seniority, remaining contract and team bonding requirements, there are performance criteria that a player must meet to be considered for a contract as a designated player. This means that one of the following criteria must be met (using this season as an example):
- Be a member of the first, second or third team All-NBA in the 2020-21 season.
- Was named to the All-NBA first, second or third team in the 2018-19 and 2019-20 seasons.
- He was named the 2020-21 Defensive Player of the Year.
- Was named defender of the year in 2018-19 and 2019-20.
- Be named the NBA’s best player in 2018-19, 2019-20 or 2020-21.
Players can be offered a contract worth 30% of the maximum salary as an extension of their rookie contract or as a free agent contract after their rookie contract expires. The same qualifying criteria apply as for the maximum security prison. This is also known as the Rose Rule, in honor of Derrick Rose, who won the Most Valuable Player award during his first year in the NBA. The default maximum stretch for an assigned recruit is 25% of the limit. Finally, the veteran contract is for free agents with 8 or 9 years of service who meet at least one qualifying criterion. Teams may have no more than two designated rookies and two designated veterans on their roster. Nikola Jokic’s supermax is expected to be worth $241 million, making it the largest contract in NBA history. Based on the projected $121.5 million salary cap for 2023-24, Jokic’s supermax would be $42.6 million, $44.9 million, $48.2 million, $51.5 million and $54.8 million over five seasons.
The NBA’s MVP award went to Oklahoma City Thunder guard Russell Westbrook on Monday, but I’m not here to talk about that. No, my focus is on Serbian center Nikola Jokić, who some believe is the best young player the NBA has seen in years.. Read more about jamal murray salary and let us know what you think.
