The signing of Odell Beckham Jr. with the Los Angeles Rams is shocking for a number of reasons. To begin with, the Rams kept a low profile in their pursuit of the intriguing receiver. They weren’t considered a viable option until the last days of OBJ’s free agency. Second, the Rams already have a WR depth chart. Due to a lack of targets, they just released veteran wideout DeSean Jackson.
Beckham Jr. has made it clear that he wants to earn a significant amount of targets every game. In Los Angeles, this may be an issue.

Before assessing Beckham Jr.’s prospects with the Rams, it’s critical to understand why Jackson’s time in Los Angeles was unsuccessful. After all, over the offseason, Rams head coach Sean McVay made a big deal out of Jackson’s hiring. Jackson was pleased to be able to come home and perform in his hometown of Los Angeles.
Jackson only saw 15 targets in seven games with the Rams. He caught eight passes for 221 yards in such a tiny sample size, which is incredible. Jackson’s 75-yard touchdown reception against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers was crucial in the Rams’ victory against their NFC foe.
This sort of hidden weapon job, on the other hand, did not meet Jackson’s expectations. He feels that, even at 35, he can play a considerably more prominent part in an NFL offense. Jackson promptly signed with the Las Vegas Raiders after seeking his release, a club in desperate need of a fresh deep threat.
Due to a lack of playing time, Jackson’s stint with the Rams and Sean McVay was limited. It’s tough not to worry whether Beckham Jr. will go through anything similar.

This is more of a Sean McVay problem (he’s the one calling the plays), but Beckham Jr. has to avoid the DeSean Jackson treatment if he wants to prosper in Los Angeles. OBJ’s big personality would seem to dominate the football field. That wasn’t always the case in Cleveland, however. He was typically an afterthought in the Browns’ offense, which eventually led to his release.
There are even more mouths to feed in LA. With Cooper Kupp, Robert Woods, and Van Jefferson on the field, quarterback Matthew Stafford was already having trouble delivering the ball to everyone.
Kupp, who is now leading the NFL in receiving yards, has caught Stafford’s eye. Even with the addition of OBJ, it’s difficult to picture Stafford going out of his way to target Kupp less in the future.
The Rams and Odell Beckham Jr. must strike a balance.

Beckham Jr. had the option of signing with clubs in severe need of a wide receiver (such as the New Orleans Saints and New England Patriots), but he decided to join the star-studded Rams instead. He made that choice.
While McVay and Stafford must focus on getting their new WR the ball, OBJ must also learn about the environment he will be entering. The Rams have already won seven games without Beckham Jr., proving that he isn’t required for success.
As long as the two sides can strike a happy medium, OBJ will only help the Rams’ attack. A repeat of the DeSean Jackson scenario, on the other hand, could swiftly destabilize LA’s relationship. This is a problem that must be resolved by both sides.
