Patrick Reed may be under fire for a recent cheating scandal but his love of golf began in earnest thanks to a family dog. In a new interview with Golf Digest, Reed reveals he accidentally killed his dog the first time he picked up a golf club. “I was like five years old,” Reed told Golf Digest. “I was riding around in the golf cart and I saw a rabbit. I thought it would be awesome to hit this rabbit with a golf ball, because it would probably explode. I thought it would be a fun thing to do. So I go to take my club back, and I whiff, and it hits the rabbit, and it explodes.”

It’s a story that’s been told a hundred times. Patrick Reed lost his father when he was just 10 years old, and he has admitted that he found comfort in golf. But, did you know that he almost lost his dog, too? Reed ’s family was living in Houston when he first started hitting the links, and he would take his dog, a German Shepherd, with him. The first time Reed swung a club, he didn’t realize the dog was behind him. He hit a ball, and the poor doggy got hit as well.

It’s no shock that golf isn’t the most physically demanding sport.  However, that doesn’t mean it doesn’t take a toll on the body.  In fact, Patrick Reed thought he may have done some serious physical harm to himself while golfing for the first time in his life.  You see, when he was a senior in high school, Reed was playing a round with his father at a course in Augusta, Georgia.  The young golfer hit his first shot and started walking toward the ball.  He then realized he had hit the ball in the wrong direction.  As he turned to see where the ball went, he was shocked to see his dog

Patrick Reed is one of the most consistent golfers in the world today. He can move the golf ball left and right, fly high and low, and take it anywhere he wants with any club in his bag. But not all PGA Tour professionals are born with this natural aptitude. Mr Reed recalls the first time he swung his golf club as a child, accidentally hitting his dog and knocking it to the ground. At first he thought he had killed the dog, but it turned out to be okay. Fortunately for Reed, his first troubling experience with a golf club didn’t stop him from playing.

Patrick Reed discovered golf as a child

Debate drags on Reed has been an avid golfer since he grew up in San Antonio, Texas. From the age of nine, Reed went to Hank Haney’s golf ranch, where he played ball from early morning until late at night. As a kid, he practiced so much that he got calluses on his hands from swinging bats all day. At 16, Reed junior won golf tournaments and led his college to two state titles. Reed recently sat down with Max Adler of Golf Digest and talked about the role golf played in his youth. It was my escape, the thing I loved the most, Reed said. I put on my headphones, practice and immerse myself in my own world. The game seemed simple until I started playing age-group games at the age of 10. When I was 13 years old and playing on the AJGA against 17 year olds, I got beat and passed for 50-60 yards. It made me look for nuances to keep up with the pace, and because of that, my short game and batting formation has become what it is. I moved around a lot as a teenager, and golf was a regular activity for me.

Reed almost killed his dog the first time he swung his golf club

COMPARED TO: Rory McIlroy met his wife, Erica Stoll, through the most embarrassing moment of his golf career Reed may have been a dominant junior golfer, able to beat teenagers a few years older than him, but that wasn’t always the case. The first time he played golf with the plastic clubs his father had given him as a child, he thought he had killed the family dog. I was rocking in the garden and we had a little white dog, he said. I accidentally hit the dog, he turned and I ran into the house, terrified, thinking I had killed the dog. Then, a few minutes later, I see her in the doorway, ball in mouth, wanting to play, with this look on her face: Is that all you got? Despite the fear, Reed did not give up the sport.

Reed wants to change his image as a crook

. COMPARED TO: Tiger Woods is a fool, says a PGA Tour star who knows him well Reed has come a long way since hitting the dog with one of his first wave hits. He now has nine PGA Tour victories and a green jacket hanging in his closet, but he still can’t shake off the infamous cheating label. The 30-year-old told Golf Digest that he has been treated unfairly by the media over the years and hopes that one day fans can find out who he really is, both on and off the course. When they call you a liar. That’s far from the truth, Reid said. No athlete, no golfer, who works to reach the highest level is a cheater….. If that word is thrown across the room, whether by you or someone else, it is false and a lie. Here we are, with blood, sweat and tears, trying our best and being a role model. I’ve talked to famous athletes and successful CEOs, and the lesson they all teach is this: Focus on what you can control. You can’t please everyone. Hopefully the media will eventually turn on us, but for now I’m not the type to type on a keyboard.Patrick Reed is a pro golfer on the PGA tour and also a member of the Ryder Cup team. He is known for being a great golfer, but also for being a little cocky and arrogant. I first heard about Patrick Reed in 2014 when he won his first PGA tour event, The Barclays, with a final round 62. (It was a great round, but it was not a great tournament for him because he won by 4 strokes after starting the day 4 strokes behind…but I digress.) The article I read said that, after Reed won this event, his dog chewed on the winner’s trophy and, as a result, Patrick felt so bad about his dog dying that he decided to take up golf..
