Phil Mickelson is in the news for a reason most people probably didn’t expect: He looks different these days. The 6-time major champion has been golfing at an age where other professional athletes are just starting their careers, and his appearance is the result of that. It seems like he’s undergone some drastic changes over time, but they’re not all bad – one could argue they’ve made him more attractive to younger fans who might be easily distracted by social media updates from young celebrities.

Since the Farmers Insurance Open in late January, we haven’t seen Phil Mickelson on the PGA Tour. After his outspoken remarks about the Saudi-backed LIV Invitational Golf Series placed him in deep water with the PGA Tour and his peers, the 51-year-old chose to take an extended hiatus from professional golf.
Mickelson’s mother stated he’s feeling “relaxed and content” away from the sport after he formally withdrew from the PGA Championship this weekend. She even stated that because of his new appearance, she couldn’t tell who he was.

Mickelson’s life has focused on golf for the last 30 years. However, that hasn’t been the case in 2022, as the six-time major winner hasn’t competed on the PGA Tour since January.
Lefty was scheduled to defend his PGA Championship title at Southern Hills Country Club this weekend, but he withdrew a week before the event because to the hostility he has received as a result of his public support for Greg Norman’s proposed golf league.
His mother, on the other hand, says he couldn’t be happier.
On Thursday, Mary Mickelson told USA TODAY Sports, “I wish you could see him today.” “He’s at ease, and he’s always laughing.” He’s not on the phone with people who want him to do this or that, and please participate in this event, and it’s difficult to say no when you don’t have the time. However, he has spent a significant amount of time with our family.
“His brother and sister, Tim and Tina, have also discussed it. He seems to be in a good mood. How peaceful and at ease you are. And if going through all of this is required… I’m delighted for him.”
Every golf fan, even Mickelson’s mother, is curious as to whether he will ever play on the PGA Tour again.
“[Golf] isn’t something we speak about a lot,” she said. “Whenever he comes to visit, I know we’re usually in the backyard putting and chipping and just having a good time.” He’s getting out there, I think. “I honestly have no idea.”
Mickelson’s mother is no longer able to identify him.
Mickelson hasn’t simply found pleasure away from the PGA Tour, it seems. According to his mother, he’s also developed a new appearance.
“At first, I didn’t recognize him,” she said. “He sported a mustache and had a beard.” I don’t recall him ever doing anything like that before. It’s been great to be able to go out with him since not many people recognize him.”
A mustache and a beard? Is it possible that we’re seeing a mid-life crisis? In any case, if Mickelson prefers to spend more time with his family while caressing his new beard, there’s no reason he shouldn’t return to the PGA Tour anytime soon.
