In the third round of the U.S. Open, Rickie Fowler hit his drive into the woods on the par-4 second hole at Chambers Bay. Two shots later, he would miss the green with his approach shot, and then his second shot would run into the woods on the next hole. It was a bad round for the world’s No. 1-ranked golfer, who is experiencing a rough stretch of form lately.
Rickie Fowler was once a rising star in the world of PGA golf. Hailing from a country known for its top-notch golfers β including Tiger Woods, Ben Hogan and Jack Nicklaus β Fowler was a force to be reckoned with. His success and dominance on the PGA Tour had plenty of fans and press on his side. Unfortunately, his career has gone off the path and he is now 36 years old and getting close to the end of his career.
If you follow golf for any amount of time, you’ve probably heard of Rickie Fowler. Fowler has been inconsistent throughout his golfing career, but since the start of the 2017 season, his game has seemed to have taken a turn for the worse. The swing is not the same, and Fowler’s results have suffered.
Rickie Fowler had a year of firsts on the PGA Tour in 2021, but not in the manner he had planned.
It was the first time since his debut season in 2010 that he didn’t qualify for the Masters and the US Open. In addition, this is the first time in his career that he hasn’t had multiple top-10 finishes on Tour.
And, barring a strong showing at this weekend’s Wyndham Championship, Fowler could miss the FedEx Cup playoffs for the first time since turning pro.

The PGA Tour season in 2021 is winding down, and the FedEx Cup playoff field is beginning to take form. The Wyndham Championship, which takes place this weekend at Sedgefield Country Club, is the last event of the regular season.
The top 125 teams in the FedEx Cup standings will advance to the playoffs when the Wyndham finishes on Sunday. That’s bad news for Fowler, who is now ranked 130th following a dismal season from beginning to end.
Fowler has missed eight cuts in 23 tournaments this season and has just five top-25 finishes. He’s only ever finished in the top ten once, and it was the lowest result of his career for a single season.
Fowler’s unusual difficulties with the putter may be the main cause for his decline this year. He dropped from 13th on the Tour in Strokes Gained: Putting in 2019 to 60th in 2020. This year’s season? He is now ranked 131st. It’s the first time Fowler has lost strokes in putting over the course of a season since 2012. It’s been perplexing to see his flat stick disappear off the face of the planet for a man who was once regarded the greatest putter in the world.
Fowler’s career-worst season has already cost him a place in the Masters and the U.S. Open, and it may cost him a playoff position as well.
Fowler has one more opportunity to save his season in 2021.

Fowler has had his fair share of ups and downs throughout the years. Every professional golfer in the world has. But since becoming pro in 2010, we haven’t seen him play this badly on a regular basis. The Oklahoma State product is now placed 106th in the Official World Golf Ranking, his lowest position since his rookie season.
This season, he is also ranked 130th in the FedEx Cup rankings. According to the PGA Tour, Fowler has a 39.1 percent probability of finishing in the top 125 with only one more event remaining in the regular season.
To make the 2021 playoff field, Fowler will most likely need to place 21st or better at the Wyndham Championship this weekend. His prospects aren’t looking good, however, with just four top-21 finishes in 23 races this season.
Fowler’s absence from the FedEx Cup playoffs may be the end for him.
If Fowler misses the FedEx Cup playoffs this season, it will be the first time in his professional career that he has done so. What’s the big deal about that?
Allow me to explain.
Who gets a PGA Tour card for the next season is determined by the final FedEx Cup rankings. The top 125 players in the standings after the Wyndham Championship will get a full PGA Tour exemption for the 2022 season. Unless they have a prior exemption, players who are rated outside the top 125 by the conclusion of the season will lose their Tour card.
Because to his victory in the 2015 Players Championship, Fowler is completely exempt for the 2022 season. That exemption, though, will expire in 2023. He may lose his full-time status on the PGA Tour if he fails to qualify for the FedEx Cup playoffs next season.
And, based on his current performance, the 32-year-old has a good chance of doing so next season.
