The Disney film, starring Dennis Quaid, told the story of Jim Morris, a teacher who managed to do the incredible and become a pitcher for the Tampa Bay Devil Rays after a ten-year hiatus from baseball in the late 1990s. That coach? Jim Morris, former Tampa Bay Devil Rays pitcher. In an interview with the Peoria Journal Star (Illinois), Lacy – a Kansas City Royals pitcher and the fourth pick in 2020 – explained the impact Morris has had on him. Everything he told me was right. Morris is a famous professor who became an advertising executive
. Lacey was born on the 2nd. Born in June 1999. Morris made his MLB debut at 18th. September 1999 for the Devil Rays. His road to the big leagues has not been so easy. The fourth pick in the previous baseball draft in 1983 spent several years in the minor leagues, but suffered arm injuries. At the end of his career, he moved to Big Lake, Texas, and became a physics teacher at Reagan County High School. He also coached a high school baseball team and promised his players in 1999 that if they won a district championship, he would try to join a major league team at age 35. So the Owls won the title, and it went to the Devils Race trial. Morris, who was 35 at the time, surprised himself and scouts by throwing fastballs of 98 mph, a skill that earned him a minor league contract. He made his entire career that summer and made his major league debut later that year. In 21 games over two seasons, the left-handed Morris had 13 strikeouts and pitched nine games in 15 innings. Lacey has a bright future with the Kansas City Royals
If all goes according to plan, Lacy will be in the big leagues much faster than Morris. Lacy, who is 6-foot-4 and weighs 215 pounds, entered the 2021 season as a top-30 prospect. The 22-year-old began the minor league season at Quade Cities, the Royals’ major league affiliate. In his first five starts, he struggled with ball control and gave up 16 walks in 14.2 innings.
