The Kansas City Chiefs traded up to draft Patrick Mahomes, the former Texas Tech quarterback. He will be mentored by Alex Smith for a year before taking over as starting QB in 2018. These comments from Tannehill remind us of how important and influential Smith was on Mahomes’s career and what an impact he’ll have on the NFL going forward.

The “patrick mahomes salary 2020” is a reminder of how much Alex Smith meant to the Chiefs. Ryan Tannehill’s comments about Mahomes are a perfect example of what can happen when you give up on your quarterback too early.

Patrick Mahomes is the end-all, be-all of Kansas City Chiefs quarterbacks these days. With all due respect to Len Dawson, Kansas City’s new quarterback has drastically transformed the team’s fortunes. He brought the club from constant disappointment to the promised land in the twinkling of an eye.

However, there is another quarterback worth mentioning: Alex Smith.

While most current Chiefs supporters are aware of Smith’s contributions to the team, he has just been thrown back into the limelight. The former first overall selection Ryan Tannehill’s words about mentoring have reminded everyone in the Midwest how fortunate Mahomes was to work with him.

Ryan Tannehill said that mentoring Malik Willis is not his responsibility.

NFL quarterbacks must be defensive of their employment due to the reality of the game. Only one guy may stand at center, and everybody who isn’t the starter sits on the bench. Ryan Tannehill, on the other hand, could have allowed his competitiveness get the best of him.

The Titans quarterback recently discussed how counseling helped him manage his disappointment at the conclusion of the 2021 season. While that’s acceptable and sets a fantastic example of mental health acceptance, Tannehill also made some less-than-positive remarks.

Tennessee drafted quarterback Malik Willis in the third round of the NFL draft in 2022. The seasoned signal-caller said that he was not given any early notice of the relocation, but that he did contact his new buddy. The fellowship, on the other hand, seems to start and finish there.

According to NFL.com’s Nick Shook, Tannehill said of Willis, “We’re battling against one other.” “We’re both viewing the same footage and doing the same exercises.” I don’t believe it is my responsibility to mentor him, but if he learns anything from me along the line, that’s fantastic.”

Chiefs fans are appreciating what Alex Smith done for Patrick Mahomes as a result of that remark.

While Tannehill’s remarks are startling, they are completely comprehensible. The starting quarterback is compensated to win football games, not to prepare his successor. Having said that, it does highlight Alex Smith’s tenure in Kansas City.

Smith saw the 49ers choose Colin Kaepernick during his stint in San Francisco. While the encounter was startling at the time, he eventually came to terms with it. He was ready to coach Mahomes when something similar occurred in Kansas City.

The Tennessee Titans need Ryan Tannehill to do what Alex Smith did for Patrick Mahomes. Play well, lead and be a resource for Malik Willis. Then turn things over to Willis after a year if he develops.#NFLDraft

Smith told the Kansas City Star in 2017 (h/t NFL.com), “I don’t believe you want to shy away from anything — I just think you want to be truthful.” “You want to be open and honest, even to the point of embracing it.” It may be uncomfortable at times, and it is. But you just accept it and be yourself, and I believe that’s something that everyone enjoys. I basically told him that any extracurricular activities that happen elsewhere don’t happen here. That’s exactly the type of climate we’ve got.”

Of course, Mahomes spent a year learning the ropes from Smith. Patrick Mahomes Sr. has said that “[his] kid can never repay Alex Smith for all that he done for him,” referring to the quarterback’s tenure in Kansas City.

Moving beyond the personal, it’s logical to argue that Smith’s character aided Mahomes in his football career as well. Many rookie quarterbacks have experienced early failures after being rushed into action before they were ready, as any long-time NFL fan will attest. Mahomes, on the other hand, was able to sit on the bench for a whole season. Instead of rushing for his life, he was able to prepare for the lead part. Who knows, maybe if he took 50 sacks as a rookie, he’d be too scared and insecure to make some of his more daring passes.

While it’s difficult to say how things would have turned out if Smith hadn’t stepped in to support the rookie quarterback, Chiefs fans are unlikely to wish for a time machine anytime soon. Patrick Mahomes has had a positive impact on the franchise’s history, and Alex Smith is an indisputable part of it.
