The Trey Lance era for the San Francisco 49ers may be underway. The club turns to the rookie out of North Dakota State when quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo suffers an unexpected injury.

Fans have been ecstatic since Lance was selected by the 49ers, and now they’ll get to watch him in a full-time role. Steve Young is optimistic about Lance’s future in the NFL and finds parallels between him and Lance.

Trey Lance is starting for the 49ers for the first time.

Trey Lance was selected third overall in the 2021 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers. With Jimmy G still in the fold, Kyle Shanahan’s intentions remained unknown.

Lance had lots of preseason repetitions, but Garoppolo was named the starting quarterback. Three regular-season games have been played by the rookie. He’s thrown for 162 yards and three touchdowns in limited play. He also had a 44-yard run for a touchdown.

It’s easy to see why people are so excited about Lance. He has all of the tools that scouts need, and then some. The 21-year-old is raw, but he has a powerful arm and genuine dual-threat potential.

According to, one AFC club executive stated, “He requires an offense customized to what he does best, and you have to be very patient with him.”

Lance couldn’t have wished for a better position than the one he’s in right now in San Francisco. Kyle Shanahan is one of the best offensive brains in the game. His play-calling will put Lance in the best possible position to win. In the snaps the rookie signal-caller has taken so far, he’s already proved it.

Lance has a strong resemblance to Steve Young.

Trey Lance is adored by many individuals in and around the NFL, including Steve Young.

The former 49ers quarterback and Pro Football Hall of Famer sees some parallels between himself and the rookie quarterback.

After Lance came in due to Garoppolo’s injury, he remarked, “Watching Trey throughout the game reminded me of my Tampa Bay days.” In the 1984 NFL Draft, the Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Steve Young with the first overall selection.

According to NBC Sports, he said, “He has a lot better squad with him right now than I had, but it reminded me of how I played.” You received all I had at full speed. It wasn’t very polished. I wasn’t about to give up without a fight. The ball was going to be moved. “We were going to figure it out,” says the narrator.

Lance will, without a doubt, experience the rookie learning curve. Young had to go through it, but he emerged as a much better quarterback as a result. The 49ers legend is looking forward to the future.

With Trey, you can sense his strength, athleticism, and potential. It’s palpable. “You want to see more of it,” Young said.

The youngster has a strong chance of keeping his starting position with the 49ers.

It’s always disappointing to lose a player to injury, but it’s a part of the game. Trey Lance is the next man up, and he’s in a fantastic position to take over as the starter in the near future.

Kyle Shanahan kept us wondering as to who will be the starter going into the regular season. It wouldn’t surprise me if he didn’t commit explicitly to Lance being the full-time starter.

If the North Dakota State product plays well against the Cardinals, though, the 49ers’ head coach will have to consider keeping the rookie.

Jimmy G is a solid bet. He’s well-versed in the offense and avoids making costly errors. He doesn’t, however, take the attack to the next level. That’s why Lance’s potential is so enticing. He has a significantly greater potential than Garoppolo because of his particular skill set.

Look out if Trey Lance and the Niners beat the Cardinals.
