While most fans know him from his time with the Dallas Mavericks, he’s no longer slamming dunks and swatting jumpers into the front row. Instead, after a bike accident in 2021, he now lives as a quadriplegic.
After more than a year, Bradley and his family have discovered that they are living a life that none of them could have anticipated. It isn’t always simple, as you would expect.

Bradley’s playing career ended in 2005, but he didn’t immediately give up his athletic activities. The large guy started riding and had a bespoke bike made to fit his gigantic frame. Regrettably, that pastime was eventually responsible for his altering his life.
Bradley was “hit from behind by a car while riding his bicycle a mere block from his house in St. George, Utah,” according to a statement released by the Mavericks organization. He was paralyzed as a result of the event, which resulted in a catastrophic spinal cord damage.”
The former center has given a few insights into his new life since then. As documented in a January 2022 Sports Illustrated feature, his height, which had made him a multimillionaire, had become a liability. Bradley need a specialized wheelchair that “costs more than most automobiles.” Simple chores such as turning over in bed or taking a shower have become into significant enterprises. He yearned for the days when he was fatigued after a hard basketball practice during rehab sessions. His connection with his wife and children has shifted, which is understandable.
That, however, isn’t the most recent news from the big guy.
Shawn Bradley’s problem is frankly conveyed in a recent video.
A picture is worth a thousand words, as the adage goes. If that’s the case, a video is likely to be far more valuable.
Bradley’s new existence was chronicled in a 10-minute film published by KSL in Salt Lake City on March 15. The network chatted with the former Maverick, who provided some devastating words, in addition to clearly revealing his struggles (it’s shocking to watch a former professional athlete having to be hoisted out of bed with a pulley).
“I wouldn’t call myself depressed,” he said, “but there are ideas that cross your mind.” ‘Well, maybe if I wasn’t here, it would be simpler for the folks around me.’ It wasn’t only me that was impacted, and I have the easier half of the job. I get to sit in a chair and scoot about, trying to be as cheerful as possible, while everyone around me is carrying a heavy weight because I can’t do it anymore.”
While such views are totally understood, seeing Bradley express them is nevertheless a stomach hit. He was a guy characterized by his physical abilities once again. He earned fame and money by using his physique. He now need assistance to eat, use the restroom, and even get out of bed.
He expressed similar comments elsewhere in the section, but from a little different starting point.
He added, “I’ve never been upset with God over this.” “That’s simply not how I feel about him.” It’s never been that way. ‘OK, if you want me to do this, please guide me through it because I can’t do it alone,’ I said. I don’t want to be a burden to anybody, particularly those I care about, like my wife and kids. I don’t want to be a thorn in your side.”
Despite all of this, Bradly continues to look for the good wherever he can. They may be different from putting down a tremendous dunk — like picking up some french fries vs slamming down a thunderous dunk — but they still exist.
He told KSL, “I don’t believe our happiness is dictated by the disaster.” “There are a lot of various problems we have to cope with, yet we may still be happy despite them.” We may still take pleasure in the travel and what we’re doing. It’s simply that it’s different.”
