LeBron James is a classic example of a generational sports star. A four-time NBA champion and the most decorated player in the history of the sport, LeBron is celebrated not just for what he does on the court, but also for what he’s done off of it.
In a world where NBA superstars often play their entire careers, LeBron James is one of the few who has publicly stated that the NBA is too much work. James has been in the league for 13 seasons and has won two titles, but is now 32 years old and has two more years left on his current contract. With the likes of Stephen Curry, Kevin Durant and a host of other players in their prime, retirement is a question that has been asked of James for years, going back to his infamous “Decision” back in 2010.
As we head into the final year of LeBron James’ career, we’re seeing the usual outpouring of reactions from people who think the 34-year-old should hang it up—and those who think he can still help the Cleveland Cavaliers win a title. But is it really as ridiculous as everyone is making it out to be?
It’s time for LeBron James to clean out his locker and retire. Sounds crazy, doesn’t it? In fact, it’s crazy to think that the Los Angeles Lakers can improve to the point where James can win the two NBA titles he still needs to match Michael Jordan. It’s not going to happen. Unless his motivation is to stay long enough to play alongside his son, the only thing James can accomplish in the next two seasons is to chalk up a record that already rivals that of other legends.Los Angeles Lakers and LeBron James face a tough offseason
LeBron James on the bench during the second half of Game 5 of the Western Conference quarterfinals against the Phoenix Suns. | Christian Petersen/Getty Images Never, ever speculate about your future right after a season-ending loss – and certainly don’t speak out loud what you think. Aaron Rodgers made that mistake after the NFC Championship Game and has been embroiled in drama ever since. There is no indication that James will make the same mistake after the Phoenix Suns destroyed the Lakers in the Western Conference quarterfinals. That’s not the case for the Lakers and defenseman Dennis Schroder, who are considering their future together. Schroder reportedly turned down a four-year, $84 million contract extension before the season, didn’t play particularly well against the Suns and is a free agent. For much of the season, it looked like Schroder wanted out, but now the Lakers may feel like a team ready to fold. This is a bad situation for everyone: Los Angeles is unlikely to find a contract and trading partner that will provide Schroder with the money he thought was feasible last December. Even if that happens, the Lakers will be so far over the salary cap that they won’t be able to import a comparable replacement. To make matters worse, CBS Sports notes that the Lakers could potentially lose defenders Alex Caruso, Wesley Matthews and Talen Horton-Tucker. It’s hard to believe that the Lakers’ future is so bleak, just one season removed from an NBA championship.
James has nothing better to do than to win the title of.
. Schroder’s situation highlights James’ dilemma. He’s getting older, and the possibility that the Lakers will lose more talent in Free Agency than they gain in re-signings and the NBA Draft only makes it worse. That doesn’t even take into account the fact that James has missed 27 games this season and Anthony Davis has missed 36 games. The Lakers have reason to be concerned about the longevity of their two most important players. If he wants to stay – and there’s no indication he won’t – James will overtake Karl Malone next season for second place on the NBA’s all-time scoring list and possibly surpass all-time leader Kareem Abdul-Jabbar next year. Is that reason enough to be excited to play alongside Bronny’s son, who probably won’t make it in the most demanding basketball league in the world? Points record or not, James is a better player than Abdul-Jabbar or Malone.
Don’t make fun of Channing Frye and tell him to fuck off
. Channing Frye played 13 seasons in the NBA, including three with James in the second round with the Cleveland Cavaliers. He tweeted during Game 6 of the Lakers-Suns series when he floated the idea of James’ retirement. Who can the Lakers draft or trade to get him to the top? Frye asked, as reported by Larry Brown Sports. Have you seen any free agents? There’s nobody here. Fry expanded on his comments on the Talkin’ Blazers podcast, saying James’ only real hope for a fifth championship is that general manager Rob Pelinka finds an even better player than the 18-year veteran. James can be your coordinator, your friend. You can’t count on him to give you 50, Frye said, according to NBC Sports. You can’t count on him to give you those crazy triples. He just has too many miles on him. The tread almost came off the tire. So if Rob can’t lead him to a championship team, Bron should say so, in my opinion: Thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. I had a great career, 18, 19 years in the league….. I’m retiring at the top. Like Sportscasting on Facebook. Follow us on Twitter @sportscasting19 .
