The most intriguing plays in sports history sometimes involve the unlikeliest of heroes, and this story is no different. In 1988, a young man by the name of David Robinson saved North Carolina from an upset at Michigan State on his way to winning individual player of the year honors.

“That Brother Is No More” is a song by American rapper Big Sean. It was released on December 16, 2017 and has since been viewed over 1.8 million times on YouTube. The song’s lyrics are about how the singer lost his brother to suicide and how he wishes that his brother could come back one day.

It’s always sad to see athletes we like deteriorate into shells of their former selves, and James Harden looks to be doing just that.

The 2017-18 NBA MVP isn’t as swift off the dribble as he once was, making it more difficult for him to gain separation from his opponent. He’s still a capable scorer, but he’s not putting up the same numbers as he did when he was with the Houston Rockets.

And following the Philadelphia 76ers’ recent playoff loss to the Toronto Raptors, ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith had some harsh words for Harden’s waning ability. Harden is “done,” according to Smith.

James Harden is “done,” according to Stephen A. Smith.

The 76ers lead the Toronto Raptors 3-1 in their first-round playoff series, but James Harden hasn’t looked like… well, James Harden.

In the series, he’s averaging only 19.3 points on 37.5 percent shooting, and he had 22 points on 29.4 percent shooting in Philly’s Game 4 defeat. He also turned the ball over four times and hit just two of his eight three-point tries.

Stephen A. Smith had some harsh words for The Beard after yet another terrible shooting effort.

“James Harden seems to be done,” Smith remarked on NBA Countdown on April 23. “… He’s not a scumbag; he’s still capable of playing. For you, he has a 20.0 [points] and 8.0 [assists] average. When I say he’s done, I don’t mean that. I’m referring about the James Harden we saw in Houston: that brother is no longer with us. He’s not gaining the same degree of separation as he used to… because he just lacks the speed.”

Despite Harden’s lack of agility (which might be attributed to a hamstring injury he had last season with the Brooklyn Nets), Smith feels the three-time scoring champion still has a lot to show in the playoffs. This is particularly true given that Joel Embiid is dealing with a thumb ailment.

For the 76ers, James Harden has to step up his game.

James Harden has had several opportunities to win an NBA title, but he has always come up short. He’s now in another excellent situation, since he’s paired with Joel Embiid, an exceptional player, but it won’t happen without some hard effort.

Because Embiid is out due to injuries, it’s time for Harden to step up.

He’s no longer the isolation king he once was, but he’s still capable of drawing fouls and posing a threat in the flow of an attack. In the series against the Raptors, Harden is only shooting 39.1 percent from outside the arc. He is, though, connecting on 50.0 percent of his open threes.

Harden can still be a dominating player if he can move the ball and make open shots when given the chance. All he has to do now is play less solitary ball. The 10-time All-Star leads the league in isolation frequency in the playoffs, with 46.4 percent, and he’s not only shooting 44.4 percent on such plays, but he’s also committing 19.2 percent of his turnovers.

James Harden is still a fantastic player, but if he wants to win a championship, he has to adjust his approach. That old James Harden, as Stephen A. Smith put it, is “done.”

Basketball Reference and NBA.com provided the statistics.

Stephen A. Smith is’very concerned’ about James Harden’s worrying trend.
