In case you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard that the Cleveland Browns are now controlled by a money-hungry businessman named Jimmy Haslam. Over the weekend, Haslam made one of his classic moves: firing the team’s general manager, Ray Farmer, and acquiring the services of a different GM, Sashi Brown.

The Cleveland Browns have acquired Antonio Callaway, which is a move that should make Patriots fans furious with Bill Belichick.

Cleveland Browns head coach Hue Jackson has made it clear that he wants to trade quarterback DeShone Kizer this offseason, so now is the time to do it. But what to give up in return? The Patriots should be a natural fit since they have their hands on the No. 32 overall pick, but the Browns also want to move up in the draft, which means they could throw in a package of picks to make it happen.. The Cleveland Browns haven’t done a lot of things right over the years, but in 2018, the team began to turn the turnaround. After all, Baker Mayfield, Denzel Ward, and Nick Chubb were all highly regarded draft choices at the time. While both the Pro Bowl quarterback and the excellent cornerback are expected to get contract extensions in the near future, the Browns just made a no-brainer choice to give their All-Pro running back a significant increase.

Chubb certainly made one fan base very pleased by extending his tenure in Cleveland. New England Patriots supporters, on the other hand, should be angry with Bill Belichick after seeing the Browns sign their young offensive star to a long-term contract.

Nick Chubb will be in Cleveland for many years to come.

Chubb joins the Browns as the 35th overall selection in the 2018 NFL Draft after an impressive four-year career with the Georgia Bulldogs. And it didn’t take him long to show why Cleveland was willing to pay a premium for his services.

As a rookie, Chubb was a part-time starter who fell four yards short of the 1,000-yard mark. During his first season with the Browns, he scored eight running touchdowns and two more via the air.

His second season with the club was much more successful.

The 5-foot-11, 227-pound tailback started all 16 games and racked up 1,494 running yards, 278 receiving yards, and eight total touchdowns in his first season. He also set a career high with 12 rushing touchdowns despite missing four games in 2020 due to an MCL injury.

Chubb, who is widely regarded for his great work ethic, high character, and exceptional performance, got the ultimate form of appreciation from the Browns over the weekend. On Saturday, July 31, ESPN’s Adam Schefter tweeted that Cleveland and the star running back have come to terms on a three-year, $36.6 million deal extension, with $20 million guaranteed.

The trade was another step in the right direction for a Browns team that, under the leadership of general manager Andrew Berry and head coach Kevin Stefanski, seems capable of winning a Super Bowl one day.

On the other side, Patriots supporters should be furious with the guy in control of personnel choices in New England after Cleveland made a no-brainer power play to contract Chubb through the 2024 season.

It’s incredible that the Patriots selected Sony Michel ahead of Chubb. (This isn’t just hindsight; our BackCAST algorithm also ranked Chubb higher than Michel.)

Do you think Bill Belichick has any regrets about how he handled the 2018 NFL Draft?

With two first-round picks, he selected Georgia left lineman Isaiah Wynn with the 23rd overall selection. However, when the Patriots had the No. 31 selection, Belichick passed on the guy who had over 5,000 running yards and 48 total touchdowns for Georgia. Rather of erecting a wall around Chubb, he teamed up with Georgia’s other big-name running back, Sony Michel.

Unfortunately for the Patriots, given Chubb’s hefty contract, that choice seems to be even worse.

Michel played a key part in New England’s Super Bowl victory in 2018, but he hasn’t lived up to his first-round pedigree. Since entering the NFL, a variety of lower-body ailments have kept the former SEC star off the field and in the trainer’s office far too frequently. Michel hasn’t had quite the same effect in the NFL despite demonstrating exceptional playmaking skills as both a runner and a receiver in college.

Patriots supporters should be enraged by Belichick’s choice to go with a less-productive and less-durable player over the league’s top overall running back. After all, Michel seems to be on the verge of becoming a first-round failure. Meanwhile, Chubb seems to be a long-term solution for Cleveland’s rushing assault.

Belichick’s ineptitude to assess and select talent players has once again been brought to light. Given that the two backs were teammates in college, the Patriots’ decision not to design their offense around Chubb seems extremely stupid. And although some see talented third-year player Damien Harris as a future star, it doesn’t excuse Belichick from selecting another ill-advised early-round choice.

Following all, Lamar Jackson was the first player off the board after Michel, and Chubb came in three selections later. In the end, Belichick gets a lot of flak for passing up on a potential star in favor of a guy who may be on his way out of Foxborough sooner rather than later.

What does Sony Michel’s future hold?

Michel’s potential has been fascinating at times, but his lack of consistency and longevity cannot be overlooked. And by rejecting his fifth-year option earlier this summer, the Patriots sent a clear statement that they aren’t confident about his future.

The 26-year-old begins the most crucial few months of his pro football career with no long-term financial or employment stability.

Michel can’t afford any more injuries now that he’s healthy going into training camp. Even if he impresses in practice and in preseason games, he isn’t certain to play for the Patriots in 2021.

Given Harris’ potential and the availability of promising rookie Rhamondre Stevenson, the Patriots may consider trading Michel for a conditional mid-round selection or a player at a position of need before the season starts. Plus, if a playoff-caliber club experiences a running back injury in the coming months, Bill Belichick might get a call about Sony Michel from another general manager.

The Patriots may as well accept what they can get at that point and concede defeat on another unsuccessful draft selection.
