The Boston Celtics and Dallas Mavericks are two of the NBA’s most storied franchises. They are also complementary in almost every way, with a trade centered around Marcus Smart that would make both teams better off.

The “recent celtics trade rumors” is a rumor that the Boston Celtics may be interested in trading Marcus Smart. The Mavericks are rumored to be willing to trade for him. This could be a win-win trade because both teams would get what they want.

The Mavericks and Celtics Can Orchestrate a Win-Win Trade Centered Around Marcus Smart

The Dallas Mavericks and Boston Celtics are two teams who seem to be going in opposite ways. However, they have a lot in common ahead of the NBA trade deadline on February 10th.

The Celtics seem to be just as anxious to surround their star pair of Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown with pieces that suit their abilities as the Mavs are to build around Luka Doncic. Some of Boston’s older players are attracting a lot of attention, and Dallas is one of the clubs that is expected to inquire.

Surprisingly, the two clubs could be able to work out a win-win deal centered around Celtics guard Marcus Smart.

Marcus Smart is allegedly a target for the Mavericks.

The Mavericks, surprisingly, are one of the top defensive teams in the NBA. Dallas is ranked fourth in defensive rating, and its blitz-trap style often throws opposition teams off guard.

According to reports, the Mavericks intend to improve even more on that end of the court.

The Mavs have been “connected” to Celtics guard Marcus Smart, according to Eric Pincus of Bleacher Report. The 27-year-old recently signed a four-year, $77 million extension with Boston, but he could be moved to shake things up and provide different talent to Tatum and Brown.

Smart has a great deal to offer. He’s a two-time All-Defensive selection who can play several spots on defense. The Texan is also improving as a facilitator, posting 5.3 assists per game this season after averaging 5.7 dimes per game in 2020-21.

The Celtics have a huge opportunity because to Dallas’ rumored interest in Smart.

The Celtics may take a chance on Jalen Brunson’s potential.

Marcus Smart’s interest in the Mavericks might provide the Celtics with just the kind of player they want.

In his fourth season with the Mavericks, guard Jalen Brunson has made significant progress. He’s averaging 15.8 points, 5.5 assists, and 3.8 rebounds per game, all of which are career highs. Brunson has also improved his defense this season, and his shot creation within the arc has helped him shoot 50% from the field.

Brunson seems to be the kind of frontcourt player the Mavericks would want to combine with Luka Doncic in the future. However, he will be an unrestricted free agency this summer, and Dallas may be hesitant to provide the four years and $80 million that Pincus has said he wants.

The Celtics, on the other hand, may be in a position to sign Brunson if Smart is moved. After all, Smart recently signed a contract reaching close to $80 million with Boston. Another factor to consider for Celtics president Brad Stevens is that he may have negotiating power in a Smart-Brunson trade.

Due of Brunson’s position as an unrestricted free agent, Boston would be taking a risk in this hypothetical deal. Stevens will very certainly be able to demand draft money as a result of this.

In return for Brunson, Maxi Kleber’s non-guaranteed deal, and a 2022 first-round selection, if not additional draft compensation, the Celtics could put together a package that included Smart and Payton Pritchard (who would offer the Mavs a more pure point feel off the bench). Alternatively, if they can add a tiny filler salary and maybe give up additional resources, the Mavs might attempt to entice Dennis Schroder away.

For the Mavs, it seems to be a steep price to pay, and it might cost the Celtics their soul. However, if any club wants to make an impact at the NBA trade deadline, they will have to pay up.

Why an agreement is beneficial to both parties

Jalen Brunson’s development makes him seem to be an excellent complement to Tatum and Brown. Off the dribble, he produces for himself and is a willing screener away from the ball. Despite shooting a below-average 32.8 percent from beyond the arc this season, he hit 40.5 percent of his triples in 2020-21.

With a healthy Kemba Walker at the point, Boston enjoyed a lot of success. Brunson is an archetype similar to Walker in that he can separate himself from his opponent and make plays for himself or teammates. Kleber also provides a stretch-4 for the Celtics and will be off the books after this season, avoiding any tax difficulties. There’s also the option of getting draft selections.

Meanwhile, the Mavericks must determine if Smart is a sufficient enhancement. His shooting ineptitude doesn’t help Dallas solve its shooting problems.

Smart’s defensive flexibility, on the other hand, could be very beneficial to a top defensive squad, and he’s still a strong playmaker. Plus, Pritchard could serve as a depth guard for Dallas, and he’d be a better choice than anybody on the team right now. The Mavericks may also attempt to shift Dorian Finney-Smith and Dwight Powell to give them more opportunities to shoot.

Because Smart has become associated with the phrases “effort” and “leadership,” many Celtics fans may be unwilling to trade him. Similarly, dealing Brunson at a time when his stock is increasing may make the Mavericks nervous.

Both clubs, though, need to mix things up before the NBA trade deadline, and there’s space for the Mavs and Celtics to feel satisfied with this transaction.
