I’m a recovering sports fan, which is why I’m one of the few people who hasn’t jumped on the Jameis Winston bandwagon. What were my thoughts on the 2015 Heisman Trophy winner before the season? Let’s see… Winston’s numbers don’t stack up to the hype, his physical skills are mediocre at best, he doesn’t have the best supporting cast, and his overall game is subpar. You probably think I’m being harsh, but I’m simply being honest.

College basketball is back after a long summer break. Following an exciting season with many upsets, many teams have even more to play for in the NCAA tournament.

It’s no secret that the NBA draft is the NBA’s biggest job. Each year, teams spend millions of dollars preparing for it. They put together scouting reports, videos, and other resources to help them prepare for the possibility that one of the top college players may be available. So what makes one team’s draft preparation so special? Is it the fact that one general manager may know the draft pattern so well that he can scout players for other teams? Is it the coach or other personnel who write the extensive reports and videos to help them prepare? Or maybe the guys at the league office who put together the official mock drafts and release them to the public?

The Shaquille O’Neal vs. Kobe Bryant feud has dominated sports headlines for years. Even though they appeared in four NBA Finals and won three championships during their eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, it was their tense relationship off the court that drew the most attention. However, The Diesel’s latest disclosure throws question on how terrible the relationship was.

In 2004, the Lakers transferred O’Neal to the Miami Heat in exchange for three players and two draft choices. When the Heat won a championship in 2006, Shaq earned the first chuckle, giving him a 4–3 advantage in ring wins. With back-to-back championships with the Lakers in 2009 and 2010, Bryant gained the upper hand. Along the way, there was plenty of trash talk from both sides, but O’Neal recently acknowledged that the animosity was just business.

Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant were without a doubt one of the best duos in the NBA.

With Shaquille O’Neal and Kobe Bryant, the Lakers were a strong team in their early years, but they couldn’t get over the hump in a tough Western Conference. The Lakers went 148–66 in the regular season from 1997 to 1999, however they fell in the playoffs to the eventual conference champion Utah Jazz in 1997 and 1998, and the NBA champion San Antonio Spurs in 1999.

This is when Phil Jackson comes in.

With the Zen Master at the helm, the Lakers quickly became a dynasty that spanned the twentieth and twenty-first century. From 2000 to 2002, LA won three consecutive championships. The Lakers returned to the Finals in 2004 after losing in the second round to the Spurs in 2003. In 2004, however, the star-studded team was defeated by the Pistons in five games. The celebration came to an end with the trade of O’Neal.

There were signs that the animosity was genuine. In 1999, Dennis Rodman was a Laker for a short time. The Worm allegedly became so enraged by the team’s two young stars’ squabbling that he quit and went on a Vegas trip.

Given how the players subsequently reunited, O’Neal’s new disclosure isn’t nearly as surprising. Perhaps it’s because the beef was all along turkey.

Shaquille O’Neal claims Kobe Bryant’s rivalry with him was exaggerated.

During a recent interview on the Full Send Podcast, Shaquille O’Neal revealed the truth behind his famous feud with Kobe Bryant.

“I continued it outside of the locker room because marketing was the only thing I knew. So, ‘I don’t like him, and he doesn’t like me,’ and everyone made a big deal out of it. That’s all I’m looking for. It went too far, to the point where people believed it. Do you think we’ll win three out of four if you believe it?

It’s possible that this is a demonstration of Revisionist History 101. Bryant’s untimely death in 2020 makes it difficult for him to dispute O’Neal’s claim, allowing Shaq to turn it into a happy story.

There were, however, other telling instances. At the 2009 NBA All-Star Game, Bryant and O’Neal split MVP honors, and Kobe presented the trophy to his old colleague. Bryant intended for O’Neal to present the prize to Shareef, his little son.

Shaq told Kobe in a candid one-on-one interview that it was during the All-Star Game that he understood how tough he had been on Bryant over the years. Later, he expressed sorrow for not remaining in Los Angeles to complete his career with Bryant.

Kobe Bryant’s last message may be addressed to Shareef O’Neal.

Shareef O’Neal, Shaquille O’Neal’s son, got a text message from Kobe Bryant on the morning of January 26, 2020. O’Neal, currently a redshirt junior at LSU, was mentored by the now-retired NBA great (where his father also played). The SMS was just a check-in message inquiring about the child’s well-being.

O’Neal responded, but never heard back. He found out later, like the rest of us, that Bryant had perished in a helicopter accident later that morning. Bryant’s death saddened the older O’Neal, who delivered a moving statement during Kobe’s burial ceremony in Los Angeles. Shaq called his old teammate a “little brother” in an interview.

The facts behind the conflict will never be known. However, thinking Shaquille O’Neal propagated the idea of Kobe Bryant beef for commercial purposes may make it easier to swallow.

At the very least, it’s a lot more happy Hollywood conclusion.

Basketball Reference provided the statistics.

After winning his fifth NBA title, Kobe Bryant savagely trolled Shaquille O’Neal with a simple 6-word sentence.
