The New Orleans Pelicans are the worst team in the NBA this season, and they are doing it by being the exact opposite of the Cleveland Cavaliers. The Cavs are a great team, but they rely on their star studded roster of stars to win. They, more than any other team, are almost guaranteed to lose when they don’t hit their stars with passes and make them the focal point of the offense. The Pelicans, on the other hand, are a team that does everything they can to undermine and diminish their core players.

New Orleans has been criticized in the past for trading away its best player, Anthony Davis, but here we are. The Pelicans are doing whatever they can to rid themselves of Zion Williamson, and it all centers around one person.

The Pelicans are a notoriously stubborn franchise. They’ve stuck with Anthony Davis despite his endless injuries and underwhelming play. They’ve managed to limp through the second half of their season despite the fact that they’re a bad basketball team. And now, they’re sticking with Zion Williamson despite the fact that he was a one-and-done major college prospect. They’re literally throwing their 2019 first round pick out the window.

Over the course of his first two seasons with the New Orleans Pelicans, Zion Williamson has established himself as one of the NBA’s most intriguing players. On a nightly basis, Williamson delivered highlights, demonstrating his bright potential.

However, given the impact of player empowerment on the league, one may question whether Williamson would ever leave a small-market club like New Orleans. Many people compare his position to LeBron James’ debut season with the Cleveland Cavaliers.

That analogy seems to have some validity based on the Pelicans’ actions surrounding Williamson.

During James’ first season in Cleveland, the Cavaliers made a number of rash and desperate decisions.

Zydrunas Ilgauskas has the most games played alongside James, according to While playing alongside the four-time MVP, he also leads in seasons, minutes, and points. Big Z was a competent center who was named to two all-star teams, but he was far from a franchise running mate.

According to Spotrac, the Cavaliers’ most high-profile signings during James’ initial stint with the team were Drew Gooden (2004), Larry Hughes (2005), Wally Sczerbiak (2007), Mo Williams (2008), and Danny Green (2009).

After the 2009-10 season, LeBron decided to take his skills to South Beach and join the Miami Heat. He teamed up with Dwayne Wade, his best friend, and Chris Bosh. The trio went on to win two titles together.

Like James in Cleveland, Zion Williamson is New Orleans’ franchise player.

The Pelicans’ actions so far during Williamson’s stay with the club have not been encouraging.

New Orleans’ biggest transactions, according to Spotrac, were dealing for Steven Adams and Eric Bledsoe and signing Nico Melli. The Pelicans similarly hired Stan Van Gundy as their new head coach, only to dismiss him after one season. This summer, New Orleans has already parted ways with starting point guard Lonzo Ball, as well as Adams and Bledsoe.

Along with Williamson, Brandon Ingram is a terrific player, but the fit is dubious since neither player is a tremendous floor spacer. To this far, New Orleans’ draft picks after selecting Williamson No. 1 overall in the previous two seasons haven’t been promising. Nickeil Alexander-Walker and Jaxson Hayes were chosen the same year as Williamson, while Kira Lewis was drafted last summer. According to Basketball-Reference, they’ve combined to average 17.3 points per game throughout their respective careers.

The Pelicans signed Devonte Graham, a former Charlotte point guard, in free agency, but he isn’t a solution to the team’s issues.

The Pelicans are on their way to Cleveland and are in risk of losing Williamson in the process.

Despite the fact that it has just been two years, New Orleans is obviously having trouble putting together a strong roster around Williamson. In the last three years, he’s had three different head coaches. Like James, the former Duke Blue Devil will eventually want a championship-caliber team to surround him.

Anthony Davis and Chris Paul, the Pelicans’ final two franchise players, were ultimately moved to large market clubs in Los Angeles. Davis joined the Lakers to play with James, while Paul joined the Clippers. If New Orleans continues along this road, Williamson may be the next to go.

The New Orleans Pelicans may have lost their star center Zion Williamson, but that is not stopping them from trying to copy the Cleveland Cavaliers’ playbook. The Cavs famously traded the first overall pick in last years NBA Draft to the Philadelphia 76ers for the No. 1 pick, whom they then used to land prized prospect, Zion Williamson..
