They were protesting the Philadelphia 76ers’ plan to keep Simmons at the conclusion of the season on a $5.8 million qualifying offer. Instead of let Simmons walk and getting a compensatory lottery pick, the Sixers want to make him the next Steph Curry.

The news that Ben Simmons has been traded to another location has piqued the interest of Philadelphia 76ers supporters. The bulk of the Sixers’ fans are fed up with the point guard’s inability to shoot and spread the floor on offense, so it seemed as though his time with the team was drawing to a close.
But it’s been more than a month since the 76ers were eliminated from the playoffs by the Atlanta Hawks, and Simmons hasn’t moved. According to a recent tweet from Daryl Morey, the club may be happy to retain Simmons after all.
Ben Simmons’ trade value is inflated by the Sixers.

Simmons hit the trade block harder than one of his numerous bricks clanking off the hoop after a spectacularly dismal effort against the Hawks in the Eastern Conference semifinal series. What is the Sixers’ issue? The trading value of Simmons has never been lower.
He’s 25 years old and still has four years remaining on his five-year, $177 million deal. He hasn’t been able to overcome his fatal fault in five seasons in the NBA. In exchange for Simmons, the Sixers would be fortunate to get an All-Star quality player.
Daryl Morey, the NBA’s president of basketball operations, obviously values Simmons more than the other 29 clubs in the league. Morey is said to have offered Simmons to the Toronto Raptors in exchange for Kyle Lowry, Fred Van Vleet, OG Anunoby, and the No. 4 overall selection in the 2021 NBA draft so far this summer. In return for Simmons, he allegedly requested the Golden State Warriors for Andrew Wiggins, James Wiseman, and four first-round choices.
Morey obviously views Simmons as a top-10 or top-15 NBA asset, so unless he takes a reality pill soon, he won’t be able to find a trade partner.
The Sixers’ intention to retain Simmons may be hinted at by Daryl Morey’s recent tweet.
Fans of the 76ers are still hopeful that Simmons will be traded before the start of the 2021-22 season. They’ve had enough of the point guard and Joel Embiid, and many think it’s time to go an another route.
The 2-1-5, on the other hand, may be stuck with Simmons for a lot longer.
Morey posted a mysterious late-night tweet after the Sixers re-signed veteran Danny Green to a two-year deal on Wednesday, perhaps hinting to his summer intentions. Cleaningtheglass.com, an advanced statistics website that can analyze and compare the efficiency of particular five-man lineups in the NBA, was the source of the tweet.
Morey concentrated on the points per 100 possessions statistic, particularly the difference between offensive and defensive points per 100. The five-man combination of Simmons, Embiid, Green, Tobias Harris, and Seth Curry, who ended last season with a +15.9 point differential per 100 possessions, was at the top of the list. Last season, no other NBA group that played more than 600 minutes together produced a greater differential.
What exactly does all of this imply?

As an NBA executive, Morey is known for being an analytics geek. He’ll believe the statistics above what his eyes are seeing if they indicate something is working on the court. Morey is implying in his timely tweet that the Sixers’ top five-man unit last season was the most efficient of all the NBA’s high-volume combinations. What’s more, guess what? As it stands now, all five of those players will be returning to the squad.
In the playoffs, Philadelphia fans viewed Simmons as a timid offensive threat who lacks confidence in his shot and clogs up the offense in the half-court. Morey, on the other hand, sees basketball in numbers and statistics, and they tell him his five-man lineup is good enough to win a title. Simmons will almost certainly return to the 76ers next season, despite his ridiculous trade offers.
Only one flaw exists in Morey’s plan.
Numbers aren’t able to shoot either.
