Nowadays, he’s back in the spotlight as it was revealed that this week Tiger will be playing a LIV tournament to help him regain form for next year’s Masters Tournament. Needless to say, there has been an enormous amount of hype surrounding this event.

The LIV Golf Series has accomplished its first goal by bringing out Phil Mickelson and Dustin Johnson in front of the media to promote its first event, which starts on Thursday in London.
Given that well-known stars have left the PGA Tour to join the upstart league, the attention is well-deserved. However, the enterprise, which is being marketed by Greg Norman and backed by Saudi money, is missing a vital component: Tiger Woods.
And this isn’t just a minor annoyance for the LIV community. In fact, if Woods is prepared to take one for the team, it may be “game over” in 18 months.

Dustin Johnson, an American golfer, announced his retirement from the PGA Tour on Tuesday. He’d previously stated his plan to compete in the LIV Golf Series, so the decision isn’t shocking. Johnson joins Sergio Garcia, Kevin Na, Louis Oosthuizen, and a few more players who have quit as a result of his disclosure.
Quitting before of the inaugural LIV tournament at London’s Centurion Club seems to be a calculated attempt to escape PGA Tour sanctions, which have been announced but have not been detailed. In the not-too-distant future, they may need to rejoin their old league, and resigning may assist them avoid long punishments.
For the time being, fans seem to be more concerned about whether the defectors will be permitted to compete in golf’s four major tournaments, which is particularly important given that the U.S. Open starts on June 16. Johnson, along with the other Americans and Europeans who have moved, seem to have already ruled themselves out of contention for the Ryder Cup. Grand slam tournaments, on the other hand, are more important in terms of status, money, and image marketing.
However, neither Johnson nor anybody else now competing in golf will ever be able to compete with Tiger Woods in those areas.

There was never any question that Greg Norman and his sponsors in the LIV Golf Series would try to get Tiger Woods to join their fringe league. Woods hasn’t been in the top five on the money list since 2013, and his car accident in California in February 2021 has restricted him to only four PGA Tour tournaments since then, but he’s still important.
Woods is the golfer who draws the most attention, and he’ll continue to do so until he retires. Mickelson was once a fan favorite, and Johnson is a capable contender, but neither is a Woods-like superstar.
That’s why Greg Norman made a high-nine-digit offer, according to him. The issue was that Woods had already accumulated his first billion dollars from prize money, sponsorships, and investments. When you’ve done something once, you don’t feel compelled to do it again.
Loyalty to the PGA Tour might have played a role. The Tour has benefited from Woods’ off-the-charts popularity, but Woods has benefited as well. Furthermore, Woods is 46 years old and may choose to stay closer to home during his children’s adolescent years rather than competing in overseas events.

Tiger Woods intends to restart a PGA Tour schedule after he has recovered more of his form following the horrific accident in February 2021, despite saying that his full-time golf days are done. Most people anticipate him to concentrate on the main tournaments, with sporadic performances in minor events as a warm-up.
Each of those visits will draw greater crowds and get better television ratings than tournaments without him. That’s how Woods can have a positive impact on the PGA Tour.

By 2023, double it by a factor of five or more, and the LIV people may be famished for attention.
